What Do Embedded Systems Engineers Do?
An embedded systems engineer creates the software to control electronics or machines that are different from regular computers. This software needs to run on the specific hardware it controls. Their duties also include troubleshooting and testing. Essential skills include problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication. Work is typically in an office environment with full-time business hours. Educational qualifications include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in embedded systems engineering or a related field.

What is the difference between Embedded Systems Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?
| Aspect | Embedded Systems Engineer | Firmware Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer | Bachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering; certifications like Certified Firmware Engineer |
| Work Environment | Designing and developing embedded hardware/software for devices like automotive, medical, consumer electronics | Writing low-level code to optimize firmware for microcontrollers and embedded devices |
| Industry Usage | Used across automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, industrial automation | Primarily in consumer electronics, IoT devices, and embedded hardware products |
Both roles focus on embedded development but differ in scope. Embedded Systems Engineers work on both hardware and software integration, while Firmware Engineers specialize in writing low-level code for device firmware. Understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description
Job Summary: SEACORPis seeking Electrical Engineers at various levels to support the design, development, and manufacturing of tactical navigation systems for surface andsubmarine platforms. Electrical engineers in this role design, develop, andtest specialized electronic equipment, including navigation sensors andmilitary-grade interface circuits. Tasking involves performing requirementsanalysis, designing embedded microprocessor systems, and developing powerdistribution architectures. Engineers are responsible for ensuring hardwaremeets rigorous military standards through circuit board design, heat loadinganalysis, and preparation for environmental qualification testing (EQT).
Job Responsibilities Include:
- Tactical System Design: Design and develop navigation sensors and commercial-to-military interface circuits for maritime platforms.
- Requirements Analysis: Formulate and analyze performance requirements for complex electrical systems and components.Power Systems: Lead power distribution system design, including load balancing and power analysis for shipboard integration.
- Circuit & Embedded Systems: Design high-precision circuit boards and integrated embedded microprocessor systems.
- Cable Plant Design: Develop comprehensive cable plant designs for equipment racks and shipboard installation, utilizing copper, fiber, and RF interconnects.
- Environmental & EMI Compliance: Design equipment and components to meet Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) best practices and MIL-STD environmental qualification requirements.
- Thermal Management: Perform heat loading analysis to ensure system reliability in enclosed maritime environments.
- System Integration: Examine Interface Control Documents (ICD) and Government Furnished Information (GFI) to integrate new hardware into existing ship architectures.
- CAD Documentation: Develop end-to-end system engineering drawings and interconnect diagrams using CAD software.
- Material Selection: Select appropriate Mil-Spec and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) materials to meet design specifications.
- Collaborative Engineering: Interface with cross-functional teams of engineers, logisticians, and technicians to ensure product deadlines and workmanship standards are met.
- Field Support: Travel to various naval stations or test facilities may be required on a limited basis.
