What is the difference between Embedded System vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded SystemFirmware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related fieldsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentHardware and software development for embedded devicesDeveloping low-level code for hardware devices
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, automotive, medical devicesEmbedded devices, IoT, consumer electronics

Embedded System and Firmware Engineer roles often overlap, but embedded systems focus on designing complete hardware-software solutions, while firmware engineers specialize in writing low-level code that runs directly on hardware. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work in related industries, but their specific focus areas differ.

Is embedded system still a good career?

Embedded system engineering remains a strong career choice due to ongoing demand for devices in automotive, healthcare, consumer electronics, and industrial automation. Professionals with skills in C/C++, real-time operating systems, and hardware integration are highly valued, and the field offers opportunities for growth in IoT and embedded software development.

Our products have technical complexity including optics, embedded compute, rugged hardware and reliable industrial instrumentation software for control and processing – and all of this in a challenging, harsh environment (up to 20,000 ft below the sea!)

We are looking for someone with strong product management experience, and a solid technical foundation in both hardware and software fields, has an eager to bring their energy and expertise for developing advanced robotics and sensor systems. Our customer base ranges scientific, industrial, and defense users with a range of priorities and challenges. This role will be an opportunity to expand your capabilities while engaging with leaders in the field of subsea robotics and become an expert in underwater sensors.

This is a primarily in-person role at our headquarters in Waterloo. Some travel will be required to visit customer and industry tradeshows.

  •          Demonstrated project management & organizational skills, adept at prioritizing tasks to maximize impact (both for yourself and in determining roadmap delivery)
  •          Technical knowledge of software/firmware, electrical & embedded, and mechanical system for the development of high-performance subsea sensor products
  •          Proven ability to distill complicated technical information into clear and digestible content for customers and other stakeholders.
  •          Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to coordinate and collaborate across teams.
  •          Enthusiastic about using cutting edge technology to develop products for a challenging environment and niche market segment.

 Bonus Points for:

  •          Familiarity with subsea survey or exploration, offshore operations, or maritime industry
  •          Knowledge of industrial optical or vision systems, or rugged embedded/compute systems.
  •          Experience working with industrial and/or defence customers
  •          Familiar with data as a deliverable and data processing knowledge: Image processing, 3D modelling, point clouds, photogrammetry

The Perks:
