The Embedded System Validation Engineer focuses on validating both hardware and software components of embedded systems, ensuring overall system functionality. In contrast, the Firmware Test Engineer primarily tests the firmware or software running on embedded devices. While both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, their focus areas differ: validation of entire systems versus software-specific testing.

What are Embedded System Validation Engineers?

Embedded System Validation Engineers are professionals responsible for testing and verifying that embedded systems—specialized computing systems within larger devices—function correctly and meet design specifications. They develop and execute validation plans, create test cases, and use debugging tools to identify hardware and software issues. Their work ensures the reliability, safety, and performance of products such as automotive systems, medical devices, and consumer electronics. Collaboration with design and development teams is crucial to address any detected issues before product release.

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded System Validation Engineers during product testing?

Embedded System Validation Engineers often encounter challenges such as debugging complex hardware-software interactions, managing limited access to prototypes, and ensuring thorough test coverage across various hardware configurations. Collaborating closely with firmware developers and hardware designers is essential to identify and resolve issues efficiently. Additionally, staying updated with new validation tools and methodologies can be necessary to address evolving technology and product requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded System Validation Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Embedded System Validation Engineer, a strong background in embedded systems, electronics, and programming languages like C/C++ is essential, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with validation tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, version control systems, and test automation frameworks is commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for diagnosing complex issues and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These abilities ensure comprehensive system validation, high product quality, and successful integration in complex hardware-software environments.

Job description

About Us:
Collaborative autonomy is how self-tasking teams of machines will solve hard human problems, and HavocAI is an unquestioned leader in collaborative autonomy. We set the standard for autonomous surface vessels for a wide range of defense and commercial maritime missions. Success requires us to grow quickly, and we're looking for teammates who are passionate about solving hard problems, about pushing the envelope, and about preventing conflict and saving lives. Ambition is welcome to apply within.
About the Role:
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our Hardware Engineering team, with a primary focus on the design, specification, integration, and testing of electrical systems for uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) and other unmanned platforms. This role involves ownership of components and subsystems spanning power conversion, energy storage, RF and communications systems, signal distribution, and general electrical architecture.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience taking electrical hardware from concept through design, assembly, integration, and test-while collaborating closely with mechanical, software, and systems engineering teams to deliver robust, reliable solutions for maritime environments.
Electrical System Design & Architecture
  • Design, specify, and integrate electrical subsystems ranging from power converters to radios, compute elements, harnesses, circuit protection, batteries, actuators and antennas.
  • Develop system-level electrical architectures for USVs, including power trees, grounding schemes, communications pathways, and redundancy strategies.
  • Evaluate electrical loads, routing, and environmental requirements to support vessel capabilities and mission payloads.
  • Conduct bench-level and on-vehicle testing to verify RF performance, signal integrity, interference mitigation, and link reliability.

Wiring Harness & Component Integration
  • Produce wiring schematics, harness drawings, connector specifications, and interface definitions.
  • Oversee harness fabrication and verify assembly quality, routing, strain relief, and marine-environment compatibility.

Build, Test & Troubleshooting
  • Participate in subsystem bring-up, bench testing, environmental validation, and vehicle-level integration.
  • Diagnose issues related to power systems, EMI/EMC, communication links, sensor behavior, and embedded electronics.
  • Support field testing, including hands-on troubleshooting during sea trials.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
  • Work closely with mechanical engineers on enclosure design, thermal considerations, EMC shielding, and component packaging.
  • Collaborate with software and systems engineers to ensure electrical hardware interfaces are robust, deterministic, and well-documented.

Manufacturing Support
  • Generate and maintain electrical schematics, block diagrams, interface control documents, test reports, and configuration records.
  • Support design reviews and contribute to engineering change processes.
  • Partner with technicians and manufacturing teams to ensure electrical designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and suited to marine or high-rugged environments.
  • Assist in developing test procedures, build instructions, and QA processes for electrical subsystems.

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in electrical engineering focused on system design, integration, and testing.
  • Strong background in power electronics, power conversion, and electrical subsystem integration.
  • Experience with RF/comms systems, including antennas, radios, GPS, and digital communication links.
  • Ability to create, read, and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and harness documentation.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype builds, electrical assembly, test equipment, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of electrical components, grounding, EMI/EMC, and marine/ruggedized system considerations.
  • Experience integrating electrical subsystems into complex platforms such as unmanned vehicles.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a Secret Security Clearance.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with uncrewed systems, especially maritime platforms (USVs, UUVs, UAVs, or UGVs).
  • Familiarity with harness design tools or PLM/ECAD systems (e.g., SolidWorks Electrical, Altium, Zuken, Arena).
  • Knowledge of embedded systems packaging, grounding, shielding, and thermal/electrical tradeoffs.
  • Experience with design for manufacturability (DFM) for ruggedized, outdoor, or marine environments.
  • Strong analytical, diagnostic, and root cause analysis capabilities.

Location
  • Must be able to work from our Rumford, RI office onsite 3+ days per week.
Benefits:
  • 100% Employer paid Health, Dental and Vision Insurance for you and your families
  • Life Insurance (Employer Paid)
  • Ability to participate in the companies 401k program (Matching)
  • Unlimited PTO policy with an enforced 2 week minimum
  • Equity Package
  • Work / Home Office Stipend
  • Global Entry
  • 16 Week Paid Parental Leave
  • Monthly Health and Wellness Stipend
