What is an embedded system engineer internship?

Embedded System Engineer Internships are temporary positions designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in designing, developing, and testing embedded systems. Interns typically work with microcontrollers, sensors, and real-time operating systems to help build products like consumer electronics, automotive systems, or IoT devices. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience in both hardware and software aspects of embedded systems, making them an excellent starting point for a career in embedded engineering.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an embedded system engineer internship?

As an Embedded System Engineer Intern, you will typically be involved in tasks such as assisting with firmware development, testing and debugging embedded software, and supporting hardware integration efforts. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, contributing to real-world projects like sensor interfacing, microcontroller programming, or system validation. Expect a combination of hands-on technical work and learning opportunities designed to build your understanding of embedded systems. This role also encourages teamwork and communication, as you may participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and project meetings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded system engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded System Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like C/C++, basic electronics, and embedded systems concepts, often supported by coursework in computer engineering or related fields. Familiarity with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM or Arduino), debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and tackle complex technical challenges. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to embedded projects and adapting quickly to real-world engineering environments.

What is the difference between Embedded System Engineer Internship vs Embedded Software Developer Internship?

AspectEmbedded System Engineer InternshipEmbedded Software Developer Internship
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldsSimilar educational background, often with focus on software development
Work EnvironmentHands-on hardware and firmware development, working with microcontrollers and embedded devicesPrimarily software coding, testing, and debugging embedded applications
Industry UsageUsed in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and IoTCommon in tech companies, startups, and embedded systems firms
Search & Comparison IntentInterested in hardware-software integration roles in embedded systemsFocused on software development within embedded environments

While both internships involve embedded systems, the Embedded System Engineer Internship emphasizes hardware and firmware work, whereas the Embedded Software Developer Internship centers on software coding and debugging. Your choice depends on whether you prefer working with hardware components or software development within embedded systems.

Is there a demand for embedded system engineer internships?

There is a strong and growing demand for embedded system engineer internships as industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and IoT expand. Internships in this field often require knowledge of programming languages like C or C++, and familiarity with microcontrollers and real-time operating systems enhances employability. Companies seek interns to support development, testing, and integration of embedded systems, making these internships valuable for gaining practical experience in a competitive job market.

Job Overview

Are you passionate about maintaining and expanding state-of-the-art labs that enable development and testing of complex embedded control systems? Do you enjoy working hands-on with hardware and software, ensuring smooth operation of critical lab environments? If so, Mainspring Energy has an exciting opportunity for an Embedded System Lab Manager to enhance our embedded systems labs, which are integral to the development and testing of our cutting-edge Linear Generator technology.

In this role, you will maintain existing embedded system labs and create new ones. The labs include hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test fixtures with Linux computers, microcontrollers, and some motors, valves, relays, and sensors from the complete generator product. This is an exciting opportunity to join a quickly growing team working to build a new category of power for an affordable, reliable, and netโ€‘zero carbon grid.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with software and embedded engineers to create HIL test fixtures involving relays, sensors, Ethernet switches, and RS-232/RS-485 serial interfaces
  • Remotely administer Linux systems
  • Triage hardware, networking, and configuration issues
  • Implement procedures around organization, asset tracking, and equipment maintenance
  • Build scalable physical infrastructure for device reliability, applying IT best practices around power continuity and rack & stack standardization
  • Act as an onsite point of contact for lab operations
Qualifications (must haves)
  1. Handsโ€‘on experience configuring, troubleshooting, and debugging Linux-based networked devices and communication protocols, including TCP/IP, UDP, and serial interfaces
  2. Excellent communication skills, capable of collaborating with crossโ€‘functional teams and supporting remote workers with labโ€‘related tasks
  3. Detailโ€‘oriented and proactive, with a passion for maintaining high standards in lab organization and system upkeep
  4. Working knowledge of lowโ€‘voltage power distribution and circuit fundamentals
  5. Bachelor's degree in engineering or information technology and two years of work experience
Desirable Qualifications
  • A keen eye for process and efficiency improvements
  • Sysadmin experience or help desk experience at scale
  • Handsโ€‘on shop or lab experience
    • Skills: 5S, cable management, general handiness
  • Experience with automation using Python, Bash, and C++
  • Experience with asset management at scale
  • Familiarity with high voltage and power electronics
  • Experience using common test tools like Jira, Xray, Git, or similar
  • Experience building hardwareโ€‘inโ€‘the-loop embedded systems
  • Experience building out CI/CD pipelines

$102,000 - $120,000 a year

This position is onsite at our Menlo Park HQ. The salary will be adjusted to reflect local market conditions based on employee location as well as the experience of the employee. Along with the base salary, Mainspring offers preโ€‘IPO stock options + benefits.

Does your experience not meet all of our posted requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to positions unless they meet every listed requirement. At Mainspring, we are committed to building a diverse, inclusive, flexible, and collaborative environment, so if you want to help us transition the world to clean and affordable electricity, and donโ€™t meet all posted requirements for a particular role, weโ€™d still love to hear from you. Mainspring can sometimes be flexible enough to shift responsibilities for the right person, or otherwise identify open or upcoming roles that may better fit your professional background.

In more traditional words, Mainspring Energy, Inc is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, or protected veteran status and will not be discriminated against on the basis of disability.

This compensation and benefits information is based on Mainspring Energy's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. We generally do not negotiate on salary once we have made an offer. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of jobโ€‘related factors that may include location, relevant prior experience and/or education, or particular skills and expertise. New hires joining the company tend to be paid within the starting base pay range noted above, with opportunities to increase pay over time based on development of additional skills, competencies, and companyโ€‘specific knowledge.
