Embedded System Engineer Internship information

What is an embedded system engineer internship?

Embedded System Engineer Internships are temporary positions designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in designing, developing, and testing embedded systems. Interns typically work with microcontrollers, sensors, and real-time operating systems to help build products like consumer electronics, automotive systems, or IoT devices. These internships provide valuable hands-on experience in both hardware and software aspects of embedded systems, making them an excellent starting point for a career in embedded engineering.

What kinds of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an embedded system engineer internship?

As an Embedded System Engineer Intern, you will typically be involved in tasks such as assisting with firmware development, testing and debugging embedded software, and supporting hardware integration efforts. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced engineers, contributing to real-world projects like sensor interfacing, microcontroller programming, or system validation. Expect a combination of hands-on technical work and learning opportunities designed to build your understanding of embedded systems. This role also encourages teamwork and communication, as you may participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and project meetings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded system engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded System Engineer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like C/C++, basic electronics, and embedded systems concepts, often supported by coursework in computer engineering or related fields. Familiarity with microcontroller platforms (such as ARM or Arduino), debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and tackle complex technical challenges. These skills are crucial for successfully contributing to embedded projects and adapting quickly to real-world engineering environments.

What is the difference between Embedded System Engineer Internship vs Embedded Software Developer Internship?

AspectEmbedded System Engineer InternshipEmbedded Software Developer Internship
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldsSimilar educational background, often with focus on software development
Work EnvironmentHands-on hardware and firmware development, working with microcontrollers and embedded devicesPrimarily software coding, testing, and debugging embedded applications
Industry UsageUsed in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and IoTCommon in tech companies, startups, and embedded systems firms
Search & Comparison IntentInterested in hardware-software integration roles in embedded systemsFocused on software development within embedded environments

While both internships involve embedded systems, the Embedded System Engineer Internship emphasizes hardware and firmware work, whereas the Embedded Software Developer Internship centers on software coding and debugging. Your choice depends on whether you prefer working with hardware components or software development within embedded systems.

Is there a demand for embedded system engineer internships?

There is a strong and growing demand for embedded system engineer internships as industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and IoT expand. Internships in this field often require knowledge of programming languages like C or C++, and familiarity with microcontrollers and real-time operating systems enhances employability. Companies seek interns to support development, testing, and integration of embedded systems, making these internships valuable for gaining practical experience in a competitive job market.

Are you ready to lead a high-performing team at the forefront of aviation technology?

Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead our Connected Aviation Solutions (CAS) software team developing and sustaining mission-critical Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Avionics systems used worldwide for civil and military operations. You will guide a talented group of engineers building safety-of-life, highly reliable solutions that ensure global aviation traffic is monitored, managed, and protected.

This is an opportunity to lead a team working across complex, large-scale legacy systems while driving modernization, DevSecOps adoption, and cloud/container-based architectures. You will play a central role in technical strategy, execution excellence, and people development within a dynamic, cross-functional environment.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you’ll not only oversee day-to-day development activities but also influence strategy, process improvements, and engineering excellence. If you’re a decisive leader with a passion for software, systems, and people, this is your runway.

This position will sit at our Aguadilla, PR location. You must be residing in Puerto Rico at the time of starting employment. Relocation is not offered.

This role is categorized as hybrid, with 3 days onsite and 2 days remote following the schedule assigned by the Manager.

What YOU will do:

  • Lead a team of software engineers delivering high-quality, safety‑critical ATC and avionics applications.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance team culture focused on accountability, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.
  • Set clear technical direction across development, integration, and sustainment efforts for large-scale, operational systems.
  • Oversee development within complex legacy code bases while advancing modernization efforts (DevSecOps, automation, pipelines, containerization, orchestration).
  • Ensure high-quality software artifacts that comply with aerospace standards and internal RTX engineering processes.
  • Guide engineers through investigation and resolution of complex technical issues, demonstrating strong systems-level thinking and an ability to connect software behavior with broader system performance.
  • Support design reviews, architecture discussions, and integration planning across cross-functional teams (systems, verification, program engineering).
  • Manage team capacity, resource allocation, hiring decisions, succession planning, and performance evaluations.
  • Support program-level cost estimation, risk management, schedule planning, and technical execution reporting.
  • Maintain strong adherence to established processes, Agile methodologies, documentation standards, and compliance expectations.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives related to CI/CD automation, deployment pipelines, orchestration tooling, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Oversee use of container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm) and asynchronous messaging systems (ZeroMQ, RabbitMQ) within operational software solutions.

What YOU will learn:

  • You will learn about our growing engineering team in Puerto Rico; What we do? Who we support? How we work?
  • You will learn the technologies of today and tomorrow which we count on to maintain world leadership in the aerospace industry.
  • You will learn why people enjoy and feel fulfilled by working in our industry.

Qualifications you must have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated professional experience communicating in English (verbal and written).
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Leadership experience in embedded or safety-critical software development, ideally within aerospace, ATC, or regulated environments.
  • Experience supporting or developing Air Traffic Management Systems
  • Strong background in OOP and compiled languages (C, C++, Java).
  • Experience with Unix/Linux, Bash or Python scripting, and build systems such as Make, CMake, or Maven.
  • Familiarity with large legacy code bases and ability to deep-dive independently into complex, long-standing technical issues.
  • Exposure to Ada or willingness to learn.
  • Experience with DevSecOps methodologies and tools for automation, orchestration, and CI/CD pipeline creation.
  • Proficiency with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm charts, and asynchronous messaging frameworks (ZeroMQ, RabbitMQ).
  • Familiarity with Agile practices and tools (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo).

What We Offer

Some of our competitive benefits package includes:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Three weeks of vacation for newly hired employees
  • Generous 401(k) plan that includes employer matching funds
  • Participation in the Employee Scholar Program (ESP)
