What is an embedded system engineer intern?

Embedded System Engineer Interns are students or recent graduates who assist in designing, developing, and testing embedded systems under the supervision of experienced engineers. These systems typically combine hardware and software to perform dedicated functions within larger electronic devices such as cars, medical equipment, or consumer electronics. Interns often help with tasks like programming microcontrollers, troubleshooting hardware, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The position provides hands-on experience and exposure to the development cycle of embedded products, preparing interns for a full-time engineering role.

What types of projects and daily tasks can an embedded system engineer intern expect to work on?

As an Embedded System Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as developing and testing firmware for microcontrollers, troubleshooting hardware-software integration issues, and assisting with the design of embedded system prototypes. Daily tasks often include writing and debugging code in languages like C or C++, participating in team meetings to discuss project progress, and collaborating closely with hardware engineers and senior embedded developers. This role offers valuable exposure to real-world product development cycles and provides opportunities to learn industry-standard tools and methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded system engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded System Engineer Intern, you generally need a background in electrical engineering or computer science with core skills in C/C++ programming, microcontroller architectures, and basic circuit design. Familiarity with tools such as embedded IDEs (e.g., Keil, MPLAB), oscilloscopes, and version control systems like Git is highly valued, and coursework or certifications in embedded systems are beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help interns excel in dynamic project environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing reliable embedded solutions and adapting to the fast-evolving demands of hardware-software integration.

What is the difference between Embedded System Engineer Intern vs Embedded Software Developer Intern?

AspectEmbedded System Engineer InternEmbedded Software Developer Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fieldsUsually pursuing or holding a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentHands-on hardware and firmware development, working with microcontrollers and embedded devicesSoftware-focused, developing code for embedded systems, often in simulation or on hardware
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automationCommon in IoT, consumer electronics, and software companies working on embedded applications

The main difference between Embedded System Engineer Intern and Embedded Software Developer Intern lies in their focus areas. The Embedded System Engineer Intern typically works more with hardware, firmware, and microcontrollers, while the Embedded Software Developer Intern concentrates on writing and testing software for embedded systems. Both roles require related technical skills and are often found in similar industries, but their daily tasks and focus differ.

Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology can change lives for the better. It can heal us, entertain us, and make us more connected, productive, and understanding of the world around us. And we’re looking for talent who feel the same: people who want to leave the planet better than they found it, those who don’t shy away from humanity’s challenges but are determined to help solve them.

AMD is powering the next generation of supercomputing, high-performance computing, cloud, and AI. Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or creating go-to-market plans, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward.

THE ROLE:

The focus of this role is to develop and verify the embedded firmware in AMD's mixed-signal power management IP, and to contribute to the RTL design and verification of the hardware that firmware controls.

THE PERSON:

You have a passion for low-level embedded software and the hardware it runs on. You are comfortable working at the boundary between firmware and RTL, and you enjoy debugging problems that span both. You are a team player with excellent communication skills, strong analytical and problem-solving ability, and the judgment to get firmware right the first time in a ROM-based design.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Embedded Firmware Development

  • Design, implement, and maintain bare-metal embedded firmware in C/C++ in a mixed-signal power management IC
  • Own firmware architecture for boot and reset sequencing, interrupt handling, communication, fault detection and response
  • Develop and maintain the firmware/hardware interface in partnership with RTL design, including register map and programming model definition
  • Optimize firmware for tight ROM footprint, RAM usage, and real-time response constraints

Firmware Verification & Validation

  • Define and execute firmware verification strategy, including unit testing, firmware/RTL co-simulation, and regression automation
  • Debug firmware running against RTL in simulation and emulation environments, driving failures to root cause across the hardware/software boundary
  • Own firmware code quality and release readiness ahead of ROM freeze, given the limited ability to patch after tape-out
  • Support post-silicon bring-up, debug, and firmware validation on silicon

RTL Design & Verification Support

  • Contribute to SystemVerilog RTL design and verification for blocks across the team as project needs require
  • Partner with the verification team to review test plans and ensure firmware-driven scenarios are covered at block and system level

Collaboration

  • Work across Analog, RTL Design, Systems Engineering, Architecture, and Product Engineering teams
  • Contribute to design and code reviews, and mentor engineers on embedded firmware practice

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong C/C++ programming for resource-constrained, bare-metal embedded targets
  • Experience developing firmware against hardware register interfaces, including bring-up on pre-silicon models and on silicon
  • Proficiency with embedded toolchains, debuggers, and scripting in Python
  • Demonstrated ability to debug across the firmware/hardware boundary
  • Firmware development for ROM-based or non-patchable targets, with the rigor that implies
  • SystemVerilog RTL design and/or verification experience in an ASIC design environment
  • Firmware/RTL co-simulation, emulation, or FPGA prototyping experience
  • Familiarity with control and telemetry interfaces such as I2C, SPI, APB, SVID, or PMBus
  • Post-silicon bring-up and debug experience

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelors or master's in electrical/computer engineering or computer science

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
