What is an embedded system engineer hybrid?

An Embedded System Engineer Hybrid is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains embedded systems—specialized computing systems that perform dedicated functions within larger electrical or mechanical systems—while working in a hybrid work environment (both remotely and onsite). These engineers typically work on hardware-software integration, real-time operating systems, and device drivers. The hybrid aspect allows for flexibility in work location, enabling collaboration with team members both in-person and virtually. This role often requires strong skills in programming languages like C/C++, knowledge of microcontrollers, and familiarity with hardware interfaces.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded system engineer hybrid?

To thrive as an Embedded System Engineer (Hybrid), you need a solid background in computer engineering, embedded C/C++ programming, and experience with hardware/software integration, usually backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with RTOS, microcontrollers, debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required, and certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective teamwork, and clear communication are essential soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure reliable system performance, seamless cross-functional collaboration, and innovative solutions in dynamic product development environments.

How does working as an embedded system engineer in a hybrid environment impact daily collaboration and project workflows?

As an Embedded System Engineer in a hybrid setting, you'll typically split your time between onsite work—such as hardware testing or integration—and remote tasks like coding and documentation. This structure encourages frequent virtual collaboration with software, hardware, and QA teams using digital tools, while still allowing critical in-person sessions for lab work or troubleshooting. Effective communication and proactive project management are essential to ensure smooth handoffs and alignment across distributed teams. The hybrid model offers flexibility, but also requires strong organizational skills to stay connected and productive across locations.

What is the difference between Embedded System Engineer Hybrid vs Embedded Software Engineer?

Job description

Electrical Engineer II
Product ownership | Electrical, embedded, controls, validation, and technical documentation
Role Overview
The Electrical Engineer II owns defined products and engineering work from requirements and design through testing, release, documentation, and field support. The role combines electrical and controls engineering with embedded hardware/software knowledge and independent product-level judgment.
Product focus: Primary ownership is the A-T Controls product portfolio, with supporting ownership of EMI products. This role must translate product decisions into clear distributor-ready documentation and support.
Core Responsibilities
Product and System Ownership
  • Own assigned A-T Controls products and support EMI products through requirements, design decisions, technical risk, controlled change, release, and lifecycle support.
  • Maintain alignment among drawings, hardware, firmware/software, bills of material, test records, manuals, and released product configuration.

Electrical, Embedded, and Controls Design
  • Develop coordinated electrical packages, including schematics, interconnects, I/O documentation, layouts, calculations, component selections, and bill-of-material alignment.
  • Design or review embedded hardware in KiCad or Altium and develop or troubleshoot microcontroller software in C/C++, including UART and I2C device communications.
  • Develop or integrate PLC, HMI, SCADA, instrumentation, industrial-network, and related control-system solutions as applicable to the product.

Validation and Product Lifecycle
  • Plan and execute design reviews, bench tests, design verification, acceptance testing, and discrepancy closure using clear criteria and objective evidence.
  • Troubleshoot non-routine electrical, embedded, and controls issues; identify root cause, implement authorized corrections, and verify results.
  • Support new-product and product-improvement work through trade studies, prototypes, failure analysis, controlled release, and production/service handoff.

Technical Writing and Channel Support
  • Create and update technical manuals for new and existing products, including installation, operation, maintenance, configuration, and troubleshooting content as applicable.
  • Communicate technical status, risks, product changes, limitations, and corrective actions to internal teams, vendors, customers, distributors, and field personnel.

Required Technical Profile
AREAEXPECTED CAPABILITYElectrical designAutoCAD or comparable tools; schematics, one-lines, wiring/interconnect diagrams, I/O documentation, panel or cabinet layouts, and controlled releases.Embedded designWorking knowledge of KiCad and/or Altium; microcontrollers, C/C++, UART, I2C, hardware/firmware interfaces, bring-up, and debugging.ControlsPractical PLC, HMI, or SCADA experience; sequences, alarms, interlocks, instrumentation, I/O, and system architecture.CommunicationsIndustrial and embedded networking concepts such as Modbus, CAN/J1939, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, OPC UA, UART, and I2C.VerificationTest plans, acceptance criteria, electrical test equipment, structured fault isolation, root-cause analysis, and documented results.DocumentationClear engineering records and user-facing technical manuals that support production, distribution, installation, service, and product lifecycle needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline; equivalent relevant engineering experience may be considered.
  • 5+ years of relevant electrical engineering, controls, automation, embedded systems, OEM product-development, or systems-integration experience.
  • Demonstrated ownership of product- or subsystem-level engineering work with normal technical review.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills across engineering, production, service, vendors, customers, and distributors.
  • Ability to manage priorities, dependencies, and deadlines while producing safe, accurate, reviewable, and maintainable work.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing or integrating products for industrial automation, transportation, energy, manufacturing, mobile equipment, or another regulated or high-reliability environment.
  • Experience leading vendor evaluations, technical trade studies, customer design reviews, FAT/SAT activities, or small R&D projects.
  • Relevant training or certification in electrical design, PLC/HMI/SCADA platforms, industrial networking, cybersecurity, functional safety, NEC/NFPA, or UL 508A.
  • Marine, shipboard, or classification-society experience (such as ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register, or USCG requirements) is a plus, but is not required. Candidates with strong transferable industrial or systems-engineering experience are encouraged to apply.

Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in engineering office and laboratory settings, with periodic work in production, test, customer, distributor, or field environments. Occasional travel may be required for supplier or distributor visits, testing, installation, commissioning, training, or troubleshooting.
