How much do embedded system consultant jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for embedded system consultant in the United States is $137,274.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,500.00 and $163,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an embedded system consultant?

Embedded System Consultants are professionals who specialize in designing, developing, and optimizing embedded systems—computing devices integrated into larger mechanical or electrical systems. They provide expert advice and technical solutions for hardware and software integration, real-time operating systems, and device firmware. Their role often involves evaluating requirements, troubleshooting performance issues, and ensuring the reliability and efficiency of embedded technologies in products such as automotive systems, medical devices, and consumer electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded system consultant?

To thrive as an Embedded System Consultant, you need a solid background in embedded software and hardware design, programming languages like C/C++, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontroller architectures, and tools such as oscilloscopes and debuggers is also essential, along with certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills help you effectively address client needs and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for delivering reliable, innovative solutions tailored to complex embedded systems challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded system consultants when integrating new hardware with existing software platforms?

Embedded System Consultants often encounter challenges when integrating new hardware, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy software, managing resource constraints (like memory and processing power), and addressing timing or real-time requirements. Troubleshooting can be complex due to limited visibility into low-level operations, and consultants must often collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers and software developers, to resolve integration issues efficiently. Staying updated on the latest protocols and tools is essential to navigate these challenges and deliver robust, scalable solutions.

What is the difference between Embedded System Consultant vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectEmbedded System ConsultantEmbedded Software Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science; certifications like ARM, RTOSBachelor's or higher in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering; certifications vary
Work EnvironmentConsulting firms, client sites, project-basedR&D departments, product development teams, tech companies
Industry UsageUsed across multiple industries for advising on embedded solutionsPrimarily involved in developing embedded software for products
Job FocusDesigning, advising, and integrating embedded systemsWriting, testing, and maintaining embedded software

The Embedded System Consultant typically provides expert advice and integration services across various projects and industries, focusing on system design and optimization. In contrast, the Embedded Software Engineer primarily develops and tests embedded software within a specific product or company. Both roles require technical skills in embedded systems, but their responsibilities and work environments differ significantly.

Job description

Parra Consulting Group (PCG) is seeking an Electrical Engineer -- Embedded Systems / Flight Control Hardware to design and develop embedded electronic systems supporting unmanned, autonomous, and other advanced platforms for critical national security missions. This role works across circuit design, embedded computing, flight control hardware, sensors, and imaging systems to rapidly prototype and mature integrated hardware capabilities. This position is located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

More About the Role

As an Electrical Engineer, you'll provide hands-on engineering support from system architecture and component selection through schematic design, PCB development, firmware integration, board bring-up, and system testing. You'll work closely with software, mechanical, autonomy, and systems engineers to integrate flight controllers, processors, sensors, cameras, communications hardware, and other embedded components into complete platforms.

Required Qualifications
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience designing and developing embedded electronic systems, including schematic design, component selection, PCB development, and hardware bring-up.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, embedded processors, or SoCs and associated peripheral circuitry.
  • Experience developing or integrating flight control hardware, avionics, robotics, or other real-time embedded systems.
  • Working knowledge of embedded interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB, Ethernet, or similar.
  • Experience developing, modifying, or debugging embedded firmware in C/C++ or similar languages.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting hardware and firmware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and other laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to integrate sensors, communications devices, and other peripherals into embedded platforms.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience developing hardware for UAS, robotics, autonomous systems, or aerospace platforms.
  • Experience with flight controllers, IMUs, GNSS receivers, ESCs, servos, motor control, or related avionics.
  • Experience integrating cameras, image sensors, video processing hardware, or electro-optical systems.
  • Familiarity with camera interfaces such as MIPI CSI, USB, Ethernet, or similar high-speed interfaces.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, RTOS environments, or bare-metal firmware development.
  • Familiarity with STM32, NXP, TI, Microchip, NVIDIA Jetson, Raspberry Pi Compute Module, or similar embedded platforms.
  • Experience with power distribution, battery-powered systems, DC/DC conversion, and power integrity.
  • Experience with PCB layout considerations for mixed-signal, high-speed digital, or compact embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with PX4, ArduPilot, MAVLink, ROS/ROS 2, or similar flight control and robotics ecosystems.
  • Experience rapidly prototyping and integrating custom embedded hardware into operational or test platforms.
