Job description

The Global Software Manager leads software development activities for the ORTEC product portfolio, overseeing application software, embedded systems, firmware, and cloud-connected solutions. This role is responsible for software strategy, technical direction, team leadership, and delivery execution across new product development, sustaining engineering, and platform modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Software Strategy & Technical Leadership
  • Lead software strategy, architecture direction, and execution standards for ORTEC applications, embedded systems, firmware, device interfaces, and product features.
  • Drive the development of Windows applications, embedded software, instrument control systems, data acquisition solutions, communication protocols, diagnostics, installers, and hardware/software integrations.
  • Lead secure software development lifecycle practices and promote a culture of cybersecurity and software development best practices.
  • Manage configuration management, documentation standards, defect triage processes, and long-term software maintainability.

Team Leadership & Execution
  • Manage and develop application and embedded software engineering teams supporting new product development, sustaining activities, and platform modernization efforts.
  • Translate product and business requirements into staffing plans, backlogs, milestones, release plans, risk mitigation strategies, and measurable deliverables.
  • Establish priorities, assign ownership, manage performance, coach team members, and address execution or quality gaps.
  • Communicate schedule risks, technical risks, resource constraints, tradeoffs, and corrective actions to stakeholders and senior leadership.

Development Processes & Delivery
  • Advance the effective use of Azure DevOps or equivalent tools for work tracking, source control, code reviews, CI/CD, test planning, traceability, and release readiness.
  • Ensure verification, validation, requirements traceability, release controls, and product development documentation are effectively maintained.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product management, quality, manufacturing, service, sales, and customer support teams to align software deliverables with business objectives.

Product Support & Continuous Improvement
  • Support field escalations, production issues, engineering change requests, obsolescence risks, customer commitments, and corrective actions while maintaining roadmap priorities.
  • Demonstrate the ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and cost efficiency.
  • Identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.

Requirements
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field required.
  • Advanced degree preferred, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with progressive responsibility.
  • 3+ years of people leadership, technical leadership, or software management experience preferred.
  • Experience delivering software for complex instrumentation, embedded systems, hardware-integrated products, scientific instruments, industrial systems, medical devices, aerospace/defense applications, or other high-reliability products.

Technical Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of software architecture, embedded systems, firmware, device communication, data acquisition, test automation, release management, and hardware/software integration.
  • Working knowledge of verification and validation processes, requirements traceability, release controls, and product development documentation.

Technical Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, including Boards, Repos, Pipelines, Test Plans, branch policies, CI/CD automation, and release dashboards.
  • Experience with cloud computing technologies, particularly Azure services, cloud-connected products, virtualized test environments, telemetry, diagnostics, or cloud-hosted engineering infrastructure.
  • Experience managing connected instruments and remote device management, including provisioning, configuration, software and firmware updates, fleet health monitoring, diagnostics, and service workflows.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
