What is an embedded software engineer?

Embedded Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are part of larger systems, such as cars, medical devices, industrial machines, and consumer electronics. Their work involves programming in languages like C or C++ to interact closely with hardware components, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and safety. Embedded Software Engineers work closely with hardware engineers to integrate and test software with physical devices, often working within real-time and resource-constrained environments. Their expertise is crucial in developing the 'brains' of many devices we use every day.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, strong programming skills in C/C++, and experience with embedded systems design. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontroller architectures, debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top engineers apart. These competencies are crucial for building reliable, efficient, and safe embedded solutions that meet industry standards.

How does an embedded software engineer typically collaborate with hardware engineers during product development?

Embedded Software Engineers work closely with hardware engineers throughout the product development lifecycle. Collaboration often involves joint design reviews, debugging sessions, and integration testing to ensure software and hardware function seamlessly together. Effective communication is crucial, as changes in hardware can impact software functionality and vice versa. This cross-disciplinary teamwork helps resolve technical issues quickly and ensures the end product meets performance and reliability standards.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Software EngineerFirmware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; often requires knowledge of C/C++Similar credentials; strong C/C++ skills, understanding of hardware
Work EnvironmentDevelops software for embedded systems in various industries like automotive, IoT, consumer electronicsFocuses on low-level hardware interaction, often working closely with hardware teams
Industry UsageCommon in automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, industrial automationPrimarily in consumer electronics, IoT devices, and hardware startups

Embedded Software Engineers design and develop software for embedded systems, focusing on system-level programming. Firmware Engineers write low-level code that directly interacts with hardware components. While both roles require similar skills and work environments, Embedded Software Engineers often work on a broader range of software, whereas Firmware Engineers focus on hardware-specific code. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description

Senior Embedded Software Engineer Develop and deploy embedded radar seeker software across ARM-based platforms from concept to production.

Location: Costa Mesa, California

Compensation: $191,000 - 253,000 USD / year

About The Role Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Costa Mesa, California, United States

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.

About The Team

The Battlespace Awareness (BA) team develops state-of-the‑art radar systems, deployed to tackle the most significant security challenges of America and its allies. Working across hardware, software, and firmware; in both the RF and digital domains; the team delivers radar architectures that enable advanced surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeting in the contemporary and future battlespace. The Radar team is responsible for all aspects of radar system development; from concepts and architectures through to fielding and sustainment. In this role, you will work closely with an interdisciplinary technical team to define radar architectures, design solutions, build prototypes, perform testing, and mature the prototypes into products.

About The Job

We are looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to join our rapidly growing team in Costa Mesa, CA. In this role, you will be the tip of the spear for embedded software development supporting our next‑generation radar seeker products — the component that makes the weapon successful in its mission. You will be responsible for full‑stack embedded development, including embedded code running on ARM‑based microprocessors + hard processor cores (e.g. Microblaze, Nios) both in bare‑metal and OS‑based configurations, down to low‑level driver software controlling hardware at the bus level, enabling rapid fielding of capability for the warfighter. This will require expertise in embedded Linux, modern C++ and/or Rust, ARM‑based architectures, and hands‑on comfort with RF/digital test equipment. If you are a self‑directed engineer who thrives in fast‑paced, small‑team environments without spoon‑feeding, and you want to develop technology that defends America tomorrow — not in 10 years — then this role is for you.

What You'll Do
  • Design, develop, and deploy embedded software across the full stack — from application‑level code on embedded processor cores down to drivers and low‑level mechanisms controlling hardware
  • Develop and maintain embedded Linux software for radar seeker systems using modern C++ and/or Rust
  • Write device drivers and firmware that interface with hardware over SPI, I2C, UART, and other low‑level buses for data transfer and peripheral control
  • Perform hardware‑software integration, board bring‑up, and debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and RF/digital test equipment
  • Spend significant time on‑site at Anduril facilities (weeks at a time) supporting integration, field testing, and real‑world validation of products
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, RF, firmware, and systems engineers to deliver fully functional products
  • Troubleshoot complex issues that span the electrical and software boundaries
  • Operate autonomously within a small, fast‑paced team — driving development from concept through deployment without hand‑holding
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field
  • Professional experience developing embedded software for production systems
  • Strong proficiency in modern C++ and/or Rust
  • Demonstrated expertise in embedded Linux development
  • Experience with ARM processors and traditional microprocessor architectures
  • Experience writing device drivers and low‑level software interfacing with hardware peripherals (SPI, I2C, UART, etc.)
  • Hands‑on competence with digital test equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers
  • Self‑directed working style with ability to operate autonomously in a fast‑paced environment with minimal oversight
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance
  • Must be a U.S. Person due to required access to U.S. export‑controlled information
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with radar systems, signal processing, or RF sensing applications
  • Background in seeker development, missile/munitions systems, or other tactical defense products
  • Experience with RF test equipment such as VNAs, signal analyzers, signal generators, and spectrum analyzers
  • Familiarity with bootloaders, Board Support Packages (BSP), and RTOS environments
  • Experience with high‑speed interfaces (PCIe, Ethernet, JESD204)
  • Comfort with typical C++ tooling (CMake, GDB, Valgrind, etc.) and CI/CD workflows
  • Experience with Python for test automation and scripting
  • Familiarity with reproducible build systems such as Nix/NixOS
  • Background working at the hardware‑software boundary (board bring‑up, integration, field testing)
  • Prior experience in defence, aerospace, or other high‑reliability embedded domains
