What is an embedded software engineer?

Embedded Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are part of larger systems, such as cars, medical devices, industrial machines, and consumer electronics. Their work involves programming in languages like C or C++ to interact closely with hardware components, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and safety. Embedded Software Engineers work closely with hardware engineers to integrate and test software with physical devices, often working within real-time and resource-constrained environments. Their expertise is crucial in developing the 'brains' of many devices we use every day.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science or electrical engineering, strong programming skills in C/C++, and experience with embedded systems design. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontroller architectures, debugging tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top engineers apart. These competencies are crucial for building reliable, efficient, and safe embedded solutions that meet industry standards.

How does an embedded software engineer typically collaborate with hardware engineers during product development?

Embedded Software Engineers work closely with hardware engineers throughout the product development lifecycle. Collaboration often involves joint design reviews, debugging sessions, and integration testing to ensure software and hardware function seamlessly together. Effective communication is crucial, as changes in hardware can impact software functionality and vice versa. This cross-disciplinary teamwork helps resolve technical issues quickly and ensures the end product meets performance and reliability standards.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Engineer vs Firmware Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Software EngineerFirmware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; often requires knowledge of C/C++Similar credentials; strong C/C++ skills, understanding of hardware
Work EnvironmentDevelops software for embedded systems in various industries like automotive, IoT, consumer electronicsFocuses on low-level hardware interaction, often working closely with hardware teams
Industry UsageCommon in automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, industrial automationPrimarily in consumer electronics, IoT devices, and hardware startups

Embedded Software Engineers design and develop software for embedded systems, focusing on system-level programming. Firmware Engineers write low-level code that directly interacts with hardware components. While both roles require similar skills and work environments, Embedded Software Engineers often work on a broader range of software, whereas Firmware Engineers focus on hardware-specific code. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Are embedded software engineers in demand?

Embedded software engineers are in high demand due to the growth of IoT, automotive, medical devices, and consumer electronics industries. They often require skills in C, C++, and real-time operating systems, with job opportunities increasing globally as embedded systems become more integral to technology development.

Job description

Software Engineering in a Live Broadcast Environment (On-Site)

Roberts Communications Network (RCN) develops technology that supports the global horse racing industry. Our systems support live video streaming, broadcast production, and other mission-critical operations connecting racetracks and media platforms worldwide.

From our state-of-the-art broadcast facility in Henderson, Nevada, we build and operate software used in environments where timing, reliability, and accuracy matter. This is a full-time, in-person position at our Henderson facility.

Every day presents different technical challenges. You may be integrating systems with racetracks around the world, modernizing existing applications, developing tools that help monitor and control the flow of live video, or building new internal and external tools used by our employees, customers, and industry partners.

We are looking for a Software Engineer who enjoys solving challenging engineering problems—not simply implementing tickets. You will help modernize existing systems while developing new applications, services, and tools that support live broadcast operations and technology used throughout the horse racing industry.

About the Role

RCN is seeking a versatile Software Engineer who can combine hands-on technical execution with thoughtful technical leadership.

In this role, you will write clean, production-ready code while helping shape technical direction, define system architecture, and improve our internal development workflows. You will own features from concept through deployment, work with cross-functional stakeholders to clarify requirements, and make practical technical decisions that support both immediate needs and long-term business objectives.

This is an opportunity to build software that interacts with real-world systems and operates under live, time-sensitive conditions.

What You’ll Do

Build and deliver: Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality, scalable, and secure applications and services.

Architect and design: Contribute to system architecture, API design, database schemas, and technical decisions that support future growth.

Own initiatives: Lead medium-to-large features from concept through deployment while helping keep milestones and deliverables on track.

Solve complex problems: Diagnose issues across applications, infrastructure, databases, integrations, and production environments.

Mentor and collaborate: Conduct constructive code reviews and help junior and mid-level engineers grow through technical guidance and pair programming.

Improve workflows: Enhance CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment processes, monitoring, and technical documentation.

Work across teams: Collaborate with software development, broadcast operations, streaming, engineering, networking, and other business groups.

What We’re Looking For

Experience: At least four years of professional software development experience.

Core technical stack: Strong proficiency in at least one of the following backend languages or frameworks:

Python and Django

Rust

PHP and Laravel

C# and .NET

.NET ecosystem familiarity: Experience with Entity Framework, Windows Forms, .NET Framework Web Forms, MVC, MAUI, Razor, or Blazor is a plus.

Database management: Solid experience working with relational and non-relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, and Redis.

Containerization and tooling: Hands-on experience managing development or production environments using Docker or Kubernetes.

Application lifecycle: Experience designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting production applications.

Pragmatic problem-solving: Ability to debug complex system issues across the stack and optimize performance without over-engineering.

Technical decision-making: Ability to evaluate requirements and make practical trade-offs based on technical, operational, and business needs.

Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

Bonus Points

You enjoy developing unique or unconventional solutions to complex problems.

You have experience with video broadcasting, live streaming, telecommunications, wagering systems, or other media technology environments.

You have worked with real-time data, live-event systems, or other applications where uptime and timing are critical.

You have experience developing applications for connected TV platforms and devices, such as Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku.

You participate in open-source projects or have built internal development and operational tools.

You have experience managing cloud infrastructure using AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or automated deployment frameworks.

Excellent Benefits

Health plan that includes dental and vision coverage.

Prescription plan.

Life insurance.

Employer-paid long-term disability insurance.

401(k) plan with an employer match of $0.25 for every dollar contributed, up to 4% of gross pay.

Six sick or personal days per year.

One week of paid vacation after 12 months of employment.

Two weeks of paid vacation after 24 months of employment.

How to Apply

If you are a hands-on engineer who enjoys solving practical problems, improving existing systems, building new technology, and helping teams produce better software, we would like to hear from you.

Please submit your resume along with a brief note highlighting relevant projects, technical experience, and examples of complex problems you have helped solve.
