About the role
The Staff Embedded Software Engineer will lead the design, development, and optimization of embedded firmware for new product development. In this role, they will drive firmware architecture decisions, oversee development cycles, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure high-performance and reliable firmware solutions. The Staff Firmware Engineer must: be detail-oriented, organized, results-driven, have proven ability to track and complete deadline-driven projects, have outstanding communication/interpersonal skills, be a positive contributor and have a strong commitment to quality. Strong time management, organizational skills, and the ability to multitask are a must. They must be a self-starter whose goal is to get the job done and who is able to balance multiple priorities effectively. They must work closely with the hardware team and mentor others with their knowledge. They will work with outside vendors and pursue new skills, new hardware applications, and new tools to improve firmware/hardware development.

What you'll do
  1. Firmware Development & Architecture: Design, implement, and optimize embedded firmware for microcontrollers, processors, and SoCs.
  2. Technical Leadership: Guide a team of engineers, provide mentorship, and enforce best practices in firmware development.
  3. System Integration: Work closely with hardware, software, and product teams to ensure seamless integration of firmware with system components.
  4. Performance Optimization: Analyze and improve firmware efficiency, reliability, and power consumption.
  5. Code Review & Documentation: Conduct code reviews, enforce coding standards, and create detailed technical documentation.
  6. Troubleshooting & Debugging: Utilize tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers to diagnose and resolve firmware issues.
  7. Security & Compliance: Ensure firmware adheres to industry standards, security best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  8. Research & Innovation: Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and contribute to firmware innovation initiatives.
  9. Talent Development: Develop FW engineering talent within the team.

What we are looking for in you
  • Experience: 8+ years of firmware development experience, with a strong track record in embedded systems.
  • Programming Languages: Proficiency in C/C++ and assembly language for embedded development.
  • Embedded Systems Knowledge: Experience with various operating systems, bare-metal programming, and real-time constraints.
  • Hardware Familiarity: Understanding of microcontrollers (ARM, PIC, MSP430, etc.), peripheral interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART), ADCs, DACs, and debugging tools. Ability to read schematics and use an oscilloscope
  • Beneficial Experience: Experience with chemical sensors and/or floating sensors.
  • Software Development Tools: Proficiency in version control (Git), build systems, and scripting (Python, Bash).
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary teams
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to [25-50] pounds as required
  • Ability to communicate effectively via phone, video, and written communication.
  • Ability to occasionally move about the office to access meetings or resources.

Work Location: On-site in Waltham, MA
Targeted Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000/year
