Embedded Systems Software Engineer Location : San Francisco Bay Area, CA Employment: Full-time, onsite Position Overview A growing technology company is hiring an Embedded Systems Software Engineer to support the development of embedded technology products. This position focuses on creating and maintaining reliable system software for custom hardware. You will work throughout the development life-cycle, including early prototypes, hardware integration, system validation, and production release. The role involves close collaboration with engineers working in electronics, mechanical design, systems, and application software. Responsibilities * Develop and maintain Linux-based software for embedded computing platforms. * Configure and customize operating-system components for new hardware. * Support platform initialization, board-level software, hardware configuration, and peripheral integration. * Develop low-level and user-space software for sensors, communications hardware, storage, displays, and related devices. * Assist with prototype board bring-up and hardware/software troubleshooting. * Investigate system reliability, performance, startup, and power-management issues. * Build secure and dependable software-deployment and recovery capabilities. * Create automated build, integration, and validation workflows. * Document platform architecture, development procedures, and production-support processes. * Help transition embedded systems from engineering prototypes to production-ready products. Required Qualifications * Three or more years of professional embedded-systems or Linux platform-development experience. * Strong programming ability in C. * Experience with at least one additional systems-oriented language. * Practical experience developing software for embedded processors. * Familiarity with embedded operating-system build and configuration workflows. * Understanding of the Linux boot process and system initialization. * Experience with low-level development, hardware abstraction, or device integration. * Ability to debug issues at the boundary between hardware and software. * Experience reading schematics and using standard laboratory diagnostic equipment. * Knowledge of production considerations such as recovery, security, monitoring, power control, and system validation. * Experience creating automated software builds or tests. * Degree in a relevant engineering discipline or equivalent professional experience. Preferred Qualifications Experience in any of the following areas would be helpful: * Connected or electromechanical products * Embedded platform engineering * Custom hardware and prototype bring-up * Peripheral and sensor integration * Secure remote software deployment * Real-time systems * Python-based development or testing tools * Edge-computing applications * Production test and manufacturing support The Opportunity This position offers substantial ownership of an embedded software platform used across a developing range of hardware-based products.
