What is an embedded software developer intern?

Embedded Software Developer Interns are students or recent graduates who work on developing, testing, and maintaining software that runs on hardware devices with dedicated functions, such as microcontrollers, IoT devices, or automotive systems. Their role often involves writing code in languages like C or C++, debugging hardware-software interactions, and collaborating with engineers to ensure the software integrates seamlessly with physical components. This internship provides hands-on experience in embedded systems, offering a valuable foundation for a career in embedded software engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software developer intern?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Developer Intern, you need a solid understanding of programming languages like C/C++, basic electronics, and computer architecture, often supported by coursework or projects in embedded systems. Familiarity with development tools such as debuggers, version control systems (e.g., Git), and microcontroller platforms (like Arduino or STM32) is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set standout candidates apart. These skills enable interns to contribute to reliable, efficient embedded solutions and collaborate successfully within engineering teams.

What types of projects and technologies can I expect to work with as an embedded software developer intern?

As an Embedded Software Developer Intern, you’ll typically work on projects involving low-level programming for microcontrollers, firmware development, and device driver implementation. You may use languages like C or C++ and collaborate closely with hardware engineers to test and debug embedded systems. Interns often participate in code reviews, hardware-software integration, and documentation, gaining exposure to real-time operating systems and industry-standard development environments. This hands-on experience provides a strong foundation for future roles in embedded systems design and development.

What is the difference between Embedded Software Developer Intern vs Firmware Engineer Intern?

AspectEmbedded Software Developer InternFirmware Engineer Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fieldsSimilar educational background, often with focus on embedded systems or firmware development
Work EnvironmentHands-on development in embedded systems, microcontrollers, and real-time operating systemsDevelopment and testing of low-level firmware for hardware devices
Industry UsageUsed across consumer electronics, automotive, IoT, and industrial automationCommonly found in consumer electronics, aerospace, and medical devices industries

Both roles involve working with embedded systems and require similar educational backgrounds. The main difference lies in focus: Embedded Software Developer Interns typically work on higher-level software integration, while Firmware Engineer Interns focus on low-level firmware development for hardware devices.

Job description

As the Robot Chief Engineer for the Pallets & Bundles Division and Telehandler platform, you will be responsible for the technical leadership, execution, and performance of autonomous robotic systems focused on material handling, pallet movement, bundle handling, and telehandler automation solutions.

This role serves as the primary technical owner of the robot platform, leading multidisciplinary engineering teams responsible for the design, integration, deployment, reliability, and continuous improvement of autonomous telehandler and palletized material handling systems. You will work cross-functionally with Product Management, Operations, Deployment, Manufacturing, and Customer teams to ensure successful delivery of scalable robotic solutions that perform reliably in demanding industrial environments.

The Robot Chief Engineer is expected to drive engineering excellence, platform maturity, systems integration quality, and operational execution while ensuring alignment to ASI's Product Development Process (PDP), customer requirements, commercialization goals, and long-term platform strategy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the technical direction, execution, and platform maturity of ASI's autonomous Pallets & Bundles and Telehandler robotic systems.

  • Own overall robot-level engineering integration across software, controls, perception, autonomy, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and systems engineering disciplines.

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams while advancing a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and delivery.

  • Ensure all development activities align with ASI Product Development Process (PDP) standards and required gate reviews.

  • Drive platform scalability, reliability, maintainability, and deployment readiness across customer environments.

  • Oversee system architecture, requirements management, verification and validation efforts, and robot performance metrics.

  • Partner closely with Product Management and Operations teams to align engineering priorities with customer outcomes and commercialization objectives.

  • Support field deployments, issue resolution, root cause investigations, and continuous improvement efforts for deployed robotic systems.

  • Facilitate technical decision-making and tradeoff analysis across performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, and deployment considerations.

  • Manage engineering schedules, resource allocation, technical risks, and milestone execution to support successful program delivery.

  • Conduct technical design reviews and ensure engineering quality standards are maintained throughout development lifecycles.

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing and Supply Chain teams to support production readiness and hardware standardization efforts.

  • Provide technical mentorship and leadership development to engineering team members across disciplines.

  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, autonomous vehicle systems, robotics architectures, and material handling automation advancements.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, engineering best practices, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field required. Master's degree preferred.

  • 8+ years of progressive engineering experience in robotics, autonomous systems, heavy equipment, automation, industrial systems, or related technical environments.

  • 5+ years leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and complex product development programs.

  • Demonstrated experience serving in a senior technical leadership role such as Chief Engineer, Engineering Manager, Technical Lead, Systems Engineering Lead, or equivalent.

  • Strong technical understanding of robotic systems integration, controls systems, autonomy, perception systems, embedded systems, hydraulics, or electromechanical platforms.

  • Experience supporting complex mobile equipment, industrial machinery, autonomous vehicles, telehandlers, material handling equipment, or similar robotic platforms preferred.

  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, requirements management, product development lifecycles, and verification/validation methodologies.

  • Ability to drive execution across cross-functional teams in fast-paced and technically complex environments.

  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

  • Experience balancing technical priorities, deployment realities, customer needs, and commercialization objectives.

  • Commitment to engineering excellence, innovation, safety, and continuous improvement.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience as a Chief Engineer or similar.

  • Experience working in Robotics, Automation, or a similar field.

  • Master's Degree.
