Common Search/ComparisonEmbedded Quality Assurance EngineerSoftware Quality Assurance Engineer

The Embedded Quality Assurance Engineer focuses on testing embedded systems and hardware-software integration, often in electronics and IoT industries. In contrast, the Software Quality Assurance Engineer primarily tests application software in IT and tech sectors. While both roles require similar certifications like ISTQB, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

What is an embedded quality assurance engineer?

Embedded Quality Assurance Engineers are professionals who ensure the quality and functionality of embedded systems—specialized computing systems that are part of larger devices, such as automotive controls, medical devices, or consumer electronics. Their job involves designing and executing tests to find software and hardware defects, verifying compliance with standards, and collaborating closely with developers during the product lifecycle. They use specialized tools to simulate real-world usage and often work with both hardware and software components to ensure reliable performance. Their efforts help prevent costly recalls and ensure user safety and satisfaction.

What are the most common challenges faced by embedded quality assurance engineers during the testing process?

Embedded Quality Assurance Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to hardware, difficulty in reproducing bugs due to real-time constraints, and the need to work with diverse development tools and platforms. Testing embedded systems typically requires specialized equipment and a deep understanding of both software and hardware interactions. Collaborating closely with firmware developers and hardware engineers is essential to diagnose issues efficiently and ensure thorough coverage, especially given the resource constraints that embedded devices often present.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded quality assurance engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Quality Assurance Engineer, you need a solid understanding of embedded systems, software testing methodologies, and proficiency in programming languages like C or C++. Familiarity with automated testing frameworks, debugging tools, hardware simulators, and certifications such as ISTQB are often required. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help ensure thorough testing and collaboration with development teams. These competencies are vital for delivering reliable embedded products and detecting critical issues early in the development cycle.

Is embedded quality assurance engineer still in demand?

Octave is seeking a Senior Quality Assurance Engineer to be embedded within an Agile delivery team supporting our global Public Safety software, including the HxGN OnCall application suite. These mission-critical, web-based solutions support call-taking, dispatch, situational awareness, records management, mobile operations, and analytics. Experience in the Public Safety domain is highly valued.
This role partners daily with Developers, Product Owners, and Scrum Masters to ensure quality is built in throughout the delivery lifecycle, not tested in at the end.
  • Serve as an embedded QA partner on an Agile / SAFe delivery team, owning quality outcomes for assigned features and components
  • Collaborate early with Product Owners and Developers to refine user stories, acceptance criteria, and test scenarios
  • Apply and promote shift-left quality practices, including TDD (Test-Driven Development) and BDD (Behavior-Driven Development) principles
  • Design, execute, and maintain manual and automated tests at the story, feature, and regression levels
  • Contribute to and expand automated test coverage; experience with Playwright is a strong plus
  • Perform functional, integration, regression, and exploratory testing throughout the sprint lifecycle
  • Identify, document, and triage defects with clear reproduction steps, severity, and impact
  • Participate actively in Agile ceremonies (backlog refinement, sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, retrospectives
  • Analyze logs and system behavior to support defect investigation and root cause analysis
  • Collaborate with other QA engineers to improve standards, tooling, and best practices
  • Use Azure DevOps for test management, defect tracking, and traceability
  • Operate effectively in a Windows 11 environment using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) for documentation, analysis, and reporting

Education / Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience

Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience as a QA Engineer or Software Test Engineer embedded on Agile teams
  • Strong understanding of Agile and SAFe frameworks and QA's role in iterative delivery
  • Solid knowledge of QA methodologies, test design techniques, and defect lifecycle management
  • Familiarity with TDD and BDD concepts and working with acceptance criteria
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and maintainable test cases and documentation
  • Experience balancing manual testing with growing levels of automation
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Self-motivated, accountable, and comfortable in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and continuously improve skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Public Safety, emergency response, or other mission-critical systems
  • Hands-on experience with Playwright or similar modern automation frameworks
  • Familiarity with browser developer tools and debugging techniques
  • Experience with Azure Cloud, Kubernetes, and PaaS / SaaS architectures
  • Working knowledge of SQL Server Management Studio and SQL scripting

Location
  • Preference for Huntsville / Madison, AL
  • Remote candidates may be considered based on qualifications
This role requires participation in an in-person interview process and completion of mandatory in-person training. These requirements are non-negotiable and are a condition of employment.
