What is an embedded machine learning internship?

An Embedded Machine Learning Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in developing and deploying machine learning algorithms on embedded systems. These internships typically involve working with hardware such as microcontrollers, sensors, or edge devices, and using specialized tools to optimize machine learning models for low-power and resource-constrained environments. Interns collaborate with engineers and data scientists to create efficient, real-world AI solutions that run directly on devices rather than relying on cloud computing. This role helps bridge the gap between theoretical machine learning concepts and practical implementation on embedded platforms.

What are some typical projects or tasks I might work on during an embedded machine learning internship?

During an Embedded Machine Learning Internship, you can expect to work on projects such as optimizing machine learning models to run efficiently on hardware with limited resources, integrating AI algorithms into embedded systems (like microcontrollers or IoT devices), and performing real-time data processing. You'll likely collaborate closely with software engineers and hardware designers to test models on physical devices, debug performance issues, and contribute to documentation. These experiences provide practical exposure to the challenges of deploying AI in real-world, resource-constrained environments and help build skills valuable for a future career in embedded AI.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded machine learning intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Machine Learning Intern, you need a background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field with strong programming skills in C/C++ and Python, as well as foundational knowledge of machine learning algorithms. Experience with embedded systems development tools (such as ARM Cortex, Raspberry Pi, or Arduino), version control systems, and familiarity with ML frameworks like TensorFlow Lite or Edge Impulse is often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently developing, optimizing, and deploying machine learning solutions on resource-constrained embedded platforms.

Job description

Your Impact
As an intern on the Axon Electrical Engineering team, you will gain hands-on experience alongside senior engineers and mentors. You'll contribute to the design, development, testing, and debugging of cutting-edge electronic circuits that power Axon's products.
Your academic knowledge and engineering curiosity will be put into practice in real-world applications-from prototyping through validation. You'll also collaborate with mechanical and software engineers to help bring world-class products to market.
This is your opportunity to deepen your electronics and product design expertise while supporting technologies that positively impact law enforcement, public safety, and the communities they serve.
What You'll Do
  • Support the TASER electrical engineering team in designing, developing, testing, debugging, and building new products throughout the development cycle.
  • Collaborate with peers and senior engineers to deliver robust electronic designs.
  • Develop and execute test plans, define test methods, and validate designs.
  • Bring up, characterize, and debug systems and circuits using lab tools (oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, power supplies, hi-pot testers, etc.).
  • Evaluate and document design outcomes and test results; present findings to design teams for review.
  • Review product design requirements in relation to system objectives.
  • Participate in schematic design of embedded mixed-signal circuits (OrCAD), integrating power supplies, microcontrollers, lighting and display drivers, memory (FLASH/EEPROM), regulators, batteries, high/low-speed interfaces (USB, UART, SPI, IยฒC), RF transceivers, sensors, and analog/digital components.
  • Contribute to PCB design implementations and inspections using Allegro layout tools.
  • Engage in design reviews and inspections, offering constructive feedback while learning key design principles.
  • Assess circuit performance and verify compliance with product and regulatory requirements.

What You Bring
  • College senior majoring in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • Strong academic performance with a solid engineering foundation.
  • Ability to apply classroom knowledge to real-world problems through labs, internships, or projects.
  • Knowledge of discrete analog and digital components (RLCs, transistors, diodes, LEDs, voltage regulators, microcontrollers, etc.).
  • Experience designing or integrating circuits in one or more areas:
  • Hands-on bench experience with oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, etc.
  • Ability to read and analyze component datasheets and technical documentation.
  • Proficiency with documentation and presentation tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Cultural alignment to Axon Company Values: https://global.axon.com/company/values

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing embedded hardware systems (capstone, internship, or equivalent) in a cross-functional team (EE/FW/ME).
  • Schematic design experience using Cadence/OrCAD Capture or similar tools.
  • Understanding of common power supply topologies (buck, boost, buck-boost, LDOs) and their trade-offs.
  • Soldering experience for PCB population or component replacement during troubleshooting.
