Embedded Machine Learning Internship information

What is an Embedded Machine Learning Internship?

An Embedded Machine Learning Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in developing and deploying machine learning algorithms on embedded systems. These internships typically involve working with hardware such as microcontrollers, sensors, or edge devices, and using specialized tools to optimize machine learning models for low-power and resource-constrained environments. Interns collaborate with engineers and data scientists to create efficient, real-world AI solutions that run directly on devices rather than relying on cloud computing. This role helps bridge the gap between theoretical machine learning concepts and practical implementation on embedded platforms.

What are some typical projects or tasks I might work on during an Embedded Machine Learning Internship?

During an Embedded Machine Learning Internship, you can expect to work on projects such as optimizing machine learning models to run efficiently on hardware with limited resources, integrating AI algorithms into embedded systems (like microcontrollers or IoT devices), and performing real-time data processing. You'll likely collaborate closely with software engineers and hardware designers to test models on physical devices, debug performance issues, and contribute to documentation. These experiences provide practical exposure to the challenges of deploying AI in real-world, resource-constrained environments and help build skills valuable for a future career in embedded AI.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Machine Learning Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Machine Learning Intern, you need a background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field with strong programming skills in C/C++ and Python, as well as foundational knowledge of machine learning algorithms. Experience with embedded systems development tools (such as ARM Cortex, Raspberry Pi, or Arduino), version control systems, and familiarity with ML frameworks like TensorFlow Lite or Edge Impulse is often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently developing, optimizing, and deploying machine learning solutions on resource-constrained embedded platforms.

Job description

Sr Staff Embedded Systems Engineer, Wellness
Work Mode: Onsite
Location:Onsite 4 - Kohler, WI
Opportunity
Shape the future of at-homewellness-where water, hardware, firmware, and environment come together torestore, recover, and re-energize.
As a SeniorStaff Embedded Systems Engineer, you will turn emerging technologies into real, physical experiences - systems that can be felt, not just described. You willdefine architecture, build working solutions, and prove performance in theenvironments where it matters most. This is a role for a hands-on leader whocreates momentum through action, bringing Kohler's vision for elevated dailyrituals to life.
CoreResponsibilities
  • Lead by doing. Define systemrequirements, design, build, test, and refine working hardware and firmwarefrom first concept through validation, creating tangible wellness experiencesthat perform in the real world.
  • Define system architecture.Architect robust, end-to-end embedded systems that unify electronics, firmware, sensing, and controls with water, steam, thermal, lighting, and air. Establishscalable platforms that enable consistent, elevated experiences acrossproducts.
  • Engineer systems that are felt.Design and develop integrated hardware (PCBAs, control systems, sensornetworks, and electro-mechanical interfaces) that deliver comfort, precision, and reliability in demanding bathroom environments.
  • Own electronics execution. Leadschematic design, PCB layout, component strategy, and bring-up, drivinghardware from concept into validated, production-ready systems.
  • Design for real-world conditions.Create solutions that perform under heat, humidity, and water exposure, balancingdurability, safety, and long-term reliability through strong engineeringfundamentals.
  • Integrate firmware with intent. Ensureresponsive, intuitive control, translating hardware capability into seamlessuser experience.
  • Prototype the experience. Buildearly and test often using hands-on iteration to validate not only function, but how the system restores, relaxes, and performs.
  • Prove feasibility. Bring clarity toambiguity, defining requirements, identifying risks, and validating solutionsthrough structured testing, tolerance analysis, and costed execution plans.
  • Drive manufacturability. Translatecomplex systems into scalable, buildable solutions aligned with suppliercapability and production realities.
  • Protect and create IP. Develophardware innovations that are both differentiated and defensible, strengtheningKohler's leadership in wellness.
  • Stay ahead. Continuously exploreadvancements in sensing, control, and environmental systems to inform whatcomes next.
  • Communicate withclarity. Deliver focused, technically grounded insights that acceleratedecisions and de-risk execution.

What SuccessLooks Like
  • Embedded systems that don't justfunction, but elevate daily ritual into meaningful wellness experiences
  • Scalable platforms that bringconsistency and differentiation across product lines
  • First-to-market innovations thatintegrate seamlessly into real environments
  • Patented technologies that define Kohler's leadershipin wellness

Skills/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) inElectrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or equivalent
  • 8-10+ years delivering consumerproduct NPD
  • Hands-on builder with a strongsense of ownership and follow-through
  • Deep expertise in embedded systems(electronics + firmware integration) including architecture and design ofcomplex electromechanical products
  • Strong mixed-signal analog anddigital circuit design fundamentals
  • Board-level design and validationof electronic circuits including component selection, schematic capture, andPCB layout (Altium preferred)
  • Experience developing and leadingimplementation of test plans for hardware/firmware, and to ensure regulatorycompliance (EMC, FCC, CE, UL, etc)
  • Real-time embedded systemsexperience with microprocessors and microcontrollers
  • Demonstrated experience in firmwaredesign and documentation practices
  • Strong knowledge in embedded C/C++and object-oriented programming
  • Demonstrated knowledge andexperience in writing firmware for applications incorporating RTOS
  • DfX and quality management methodologies(FMEA, DFMEA, DFM/DFA)
  • Strong root cause analysis anddebugging capabilities of both hardware and firmware

Preferred
  • Power electronics and powerconversion
  • Environmental sensing (temperature, humidity, flow, air)
  • Connected systems (BLE, Wi-Fi,MQTT, Matter)
