What is the difference between Embedded Hardware Design Engineer vs Digital Hardware Design Engineer?

AspectEmbedded Hardware Design EngineerDigital Hardware Design Engineer
Required SkillsMicrocontroller/microprocessor design, embedded systems, firmware integrationFPGA/ASIC design, digital logic, HDL coding
Work EnvironmentConsumer electronics, automotive, industrial devicesSemiconductor companies, FPGA/ASIC development
CertificationsEmbedded systems certifications, hardware designDigital design certifications, FPGA/ASIC courses

Embedded Hardware Design Engineers focus on designing hardware for embedded systems, integrating microcontrollers and firmware. Digital Hardware Design Engineers primarily work on FPGA and ASIC digital logic design. While both roles require hardware design skills, embedded engineers emphasize embedded systems integration, whereas digital engineers concentrate on digital logic development. Both roles are vital in electronics industries but serve different specialized functions.

What does an Embedded Hardware Design Engineer do?

An Embedded Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing the physical hardware components of embedded systems. These professionals work on circuit board design, component selection, schematic capture, and PCB layout, ensuring that the hardware interfaces seamlessly with embedded software. They collaborate closely with software engineers and product teams to create devices like microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronics used in products ranging from consumer gadgets to industrial equipment.

What are some common challenges faced by Embedded Hardware Design Engineers during product development?

Embedded Hardware Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing performance with power consumption, ensuring signal integrity in high-speed designs, and meeting strict industry compliance standards. Collaborating closely with firmware engineers and PCB layout specialists is essential to address hardware-software integration issues early on. Additionally, managing tight development timelines while iterating on prototypes and debugging unforeseen hardware faults requires strong problem-solving skills and effective communication within multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Embedded Hardware Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Hardware Design Engineer, you need strong knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, embedded systems, and proficiency in engineering fundamentals, typically supported by a degree in electrical or electronics engineering. Familiarity with tools such as PCB design software (e.g., Altium Designer, Eagle), simulation tools, and experience with microcontrollers or FPGAs is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication set top engineers apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating reliable, efficient embedded hardware that meets project requirements and industry standards.

Job description

Eaton's PCS Group (Protection, Controls and Solutions) Advanced Technology Team is looking for a Lead Embedded Hardware Electrical Engineer to join our fast-paced team of engineers in developing cutting-edge technology for our next generation products. This position will be located onsite in Moon Township, PA, and a hybrid work model is available (3 onsite/2 remote). Relocation and sponsorship assistance will be provided to candidates currently residing within the US.
Build What Powers the Future:
Eaton's Protection, Controls & Solutions (PCS) Advanced Technology Team is shaping the future of circuit protection-across electrification, energy transition, and intelligent power systems.
We're looking for a Lead Embedded Hardware Electrical Engineer who's excited to design, build, and influence the next generation of solid-state and power-electronic circuit protection technologies. If you thrive in environments where ideas move quickly from concept to prototype-and ultimately to real-world impact-this is your opportunity.
Why This Role Stands Out:
• Own critical technology at the heart of next-gen AC/DC protection systems
• Lead from concept to prototype-not just incremental updates
• Work on cutting-edge tech (solid-state breakers, embedded controls, advanced sensing)
• Collaborate with top minds across Eaton Research Labs, universities, and national labs
• See your designs come to life in real products solving circuit protection challenges
What You'll Do:
As a technical leader, you'll drive the embedded hardware architecture and development for advanced circuit protection platforms:
  • Lead electrical design of embedded hardware for solid-state circuit breakers
  • Architect and design systems including:
    • Embedded processing & control
    • Analog signal conditioning & protection
    • Power supplies & drivers
    • Metering, communications, and user interfaces
  • Run circuit simulations and validate designs across edge conditions
  • Partner with product and application teams to define system requirements
  • Guide PCB layout and design execution, ensuring compliance with industry standards and certifications
  • Develop and execute test strategies (component, PCBA, and system-level)
  • Drive design reviews, quality, and technical rigor
  • Own project planning-roadmap, schedules, and execution tracking
  • Contribute to innovation initiatives and IP development

What you'll do:
What You Bring
• Strong background in embedded hardware design for power electronics or controls systems or related electronic systems
• Experience with analog + digital design, including signal processing and power circuits, along with digital and embedded processor design
• Hands-on expertise with circuit simulation, PCB design, and hardware validation
• Ability to lead technically while collaborating across multidisciplinary teams
• Passion for solving complex engineering challenges and pushing boundaries
The Impact You'll Make
Your work will directly enable technologies that support:
• Data Centers, Electrification and renewable energy integration
• Safer, smarter power distribution systems
• Next-generation protection in both AC and DC applications
Qualifications:
Required (Basic) Qualifications:
• Bachelor's in engineering from an accredited institution
• Minimum of 4 years of experience with embedded hardware for electronic devices
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited institution
• Experience developing circuit schematics and conducting electronic simulation
• Experience working with oscilloscopes and power supplies to verify circuit performance
• Experience writing/developing firmware for real time embedded systems
• Experience and knowledge related to design for EMC and EMC testing
• Experience designing embedded systems for circuit protection applications
Skills:
• Proficient with circuit design and schematic capture tools, specifically Altium
• Experience with bus communications: USB, Modbus, CAN, Ethernet
• Experience with AC power systems
• Experience with embedded firmware in microcontrollers (e.g. ARM Cortex, PIC)
• Experience writing and performing detailed test plans
• Experience in using Digital Oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
• Enjoys hands on work and has experience with lab equipment and safety
