What are some common challenges embedded flight software engineers face when working on spacecraft projects?

Embedded Flight Software Engineers often work under strict reliability and safety requirements, which means testing and validation are critical and highly rigorous. They frequently collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure software and hardware integration is seamless, and must manage constraints such as limited processing power and memory. Additionally, they need to adapt to changing project requirements and tight deadlines, all while staying up-to-date with evolving aerospace standards and technologies. These challenges make strong problem-solving skills and effective communication essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded flight software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Flight Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science or engineering, proficiency in C/C++ programming, and experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded systems. Familiarity with aerospace standards, software development tools (such as Git, Jenkins), and certifications like DO-178C for software safety are typically required. Exceptional problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure reliable, safe, and efficient software for mission-critical aerospace applications.

What is the difference between Embedded Flight Software Engineer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

Job description

Job Summary:
Radical AI, Inc. is an artificial intelligence company focused on accelerating scientific research and development in materials R&D. As a Software Engineer, you will design and build core infrastructure that supports software interactions with autonomous labs, directly controlling and monitoring systems in a technical domain involving robotics, machine learning, and experimental automation.
Responsibilities:
• Design and build core infrastructure that underpins how software interacts with our autonomous labs.
• Own foundational components such as orchestration layers, telemetry pipelines, fault recovery systems, and data layers.
• Ensure safe and deterministic behavior in our hardware stack.
• Build software that runs close to the metal and consider how systems fail as much as how they succeed.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Strong systems programming experience in Python, Go, Rust, or C++.
• Experience writing real-world state machines, gRPC or protobuf-based APIs, and low-latency services.
• Deep familiarity with concurrent and asynchronous programming, including event loops, cancellation semantics, bounded queues, and task orchestration under failure modes.
• Experience handling timeouts, retries, and device-level race conditions.
• Experience designing device orchestration layers that can execute long-running procedures, monitor device health, and stream telemetry.
• Experience propagating failure states and building for partial availability.
• Experience building and debugging protocol-aware interfaces for serial, TCP, USB, I²C, or similar buses.
• Understanding of framing, handshake patterns, and flow control when dealing with instruments or embedded systems.
• Experience working on telemetry pipelines using structured logs and time-series data.
• Experience building systems for ingesting and querying device state.
• Understanding of the differences between high-frequency signal capture vs sparse control logs.
• Experience designing and operating fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Understanding of retries, idempotency, dead-letter queues, and safe rollback.
• Default consideration of observability by instrumenting code with structured logs, metrics, traces.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and containerization.
• Experience building for on-prem, reproducible deployment.
Preferred:
• Experience with embedded protocols (e.g., serial, I²C, Modbus), device virtualization, or microcontroller firmware.
• Experience building or contributing to hardware simulation environments, mocking hardware APIs, and running integration tests with virtual devices.
• Contributions to systems for robotics, automation, or manufacturing infrastructure.
• Frontend engineering experience with Svelte, React, or similar frameworks.
• Experience building responsive, real-time interfaces and care about state management, testing, and usability.
• Experience working with structured APIs and understanding browser performance implications.
• Comfort designing reproducible and testable systems for devices that don’t always behave perfectly.
Company:
Radical AI develops and applies artificial intelligence and automated laboratory systems to accelerate materials research and discovery. Founded in 2024, the company is headquartered in New York, USA, with a team of 11-50 employees. The company is currently Early Stage.
