Director of Engineering, Embedded Software
 
The Director of Engineering, Embedded Software, will be a critical leader within our organization, responsible for the technical vision, strategic goals, and operational excellence of our embedded software development teams. This role requires a proven leader with deep expertise in embedded systems, a strong background in medical device development, and a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory landscape (e.g., IEC 62304). You will manage a team of talented embedded software engineers, oversee multiple client projects simultaneously, and serve as a key technical point of contact for our clients. 
 
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
      
  Technical Leadership and Strategy:
        Collaborate directly with clients to define and execute the technical strategy for embedded software development projects, ensuring alignment with company goals and client needs.
        Provide hands-on technical guidance and architectural oversight for complex embedded software projects.
        Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in embedded systems, medical device development, and cybersecurity.
        Drive innovation and continuous improvement in our software development processes and toolchains.
        Project and Client Management
        Oversee the end-to-end software development lifecycle for multiple projects, from requirements definition through verification and validation.
        Collaborate with Technical Project Managers to ensure projects are delivered on time and within scope.
        Ensure all embedded software development activities comply with medical device regulations and standards (e.g., IEC 62304, ISO 13485), including software requirements specifications, software architecture and design documents, and risk management and cybersecurity plans and assessments (including FMEAs).
        Collaborate with Business Development staff to introduce prospective customers to the company's capabilities and expertise and to develop technical proposals for new client work.
        Team and People Management:
        Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of embedded software engineers.
        Conduct performance reviews, provide career development opportunities, and foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability.
        Recruit top talent and build a robust team to meet the demands of our growing business.
 
KEY SKILLS:
    
  10+ years recent experience with modern embedded C++
        Experience developing medical devices or other safety critical systems
        Strong hands-on experience with embedded development on Linux, Windows, an RTOS, or bare metal
        Strong experience with modern SDLC processes (unit testing, static analysis, CI/CD)
        Strong familiarity with modern software development tools (Git, SVN, or other industry-standard source control) and SDLC processes
        Experience using Agile techniques, including task / issue management
        Demonstrated commitment to high quality
        Strong oral and written communication skills
        Highly motivated, self-disciplined, independent and results oriented
        Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics or related discipline preferred, or equivalent years of experience
 
DESIRED EXPERIENCE:
 
  Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering or related field
        10+ years of experience in embedded software development, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
        Extensive experience with full product development lifecycle for medical devices, from concept to commercialization
        Proven expertise in C/C++ programming for embedded systems
        Deep understanding of real-time operating systems (RTOS) and embedded Linux
        Demonstrated experience with hardware-software integration, including low-level driver development and debugging
        In-depth knowledge of medical device regulations and standards, especially IEC 62304
        Experience with cybersecurity for embedded systems
        Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client-facing skills
        Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, services-based environment
 
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
   
  Experience with wireless communication protocols (e.g., Wi-Fi, BLE)
        Familiarity with other programming languages such as Python or C#
        Experience with micro-controllers from vendors like ARM, STM, or TI
        Experience with FPGA development
 
The base salary for this position is $165,000 to $225,000 annually, and the role is bonus eligible.
