Job description

Job Title: Embedded Controls Engineer
Job Description

This role focuses on developing, implementing, and validating embedded control algorithms using MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow. The Embedded Controls Engineer designs model-based control systems for functions such as speed control, retarding control, economy modes, and operator assist features, ensuring robust performance from concept through production deployment. This position offers a long-term growth opportunity working within an agile environment on advanced control systems and embedded software.

Responsibilities

  • Develop control algorithms in MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow for functions such as speed control, retarding control, economy modes, and operator assist (including ADAS and operator assistance features).
  • Perform model-based design and development of control systems, including modeling the plant, understanding the system to be controlled, and synthesizing appropriate controllers.
  • Simulate the plant and controller together to evaluate performance, stability, and robustness prior to deployment.
  • Deploy control algorithms to embedded platforms, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems and software architectures.
  • Gather and document control system requirements in a clear and structured manner to support design, implementation, and testing activities.
  • Implement control systems in MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow, following best practices for embedded software development and code generation.
  • Apply experience with embedded software development in Simulink to generate and integrate production-ready embedded C code.
  • Utilize Autosar-based development practices when applicable to ensure compatibility with automotive and embedded standards.
  • Plan and execute testing, tuning, and verification of control systems using Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), Software-in-the-Loop (SiL), Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL), lab testing, and on-machine testing.
  • Perform Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to identify and mitigate potential risks in control system designs.
  • Create, document, and maintain detailed test plans that cover functional, performance, and regression testing for control algorithms.
  • Implement and execute test plans, analyze outcomes, and iterate on control designs and parameters as needed.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues discovered during MiL, SiL, HiL, lab, and on-machine testing, ensuring root causes are identified and corrected.
  • Conduct data analysis of time series data to evaluate control performance, identify anomalies, and drive tuning improvements.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports on test results, findings, and recommendations for design improvements or corrective actions.
  • Collaborate within an agile development environment, participating in planning, review, and continuous improvement activities related to control software development.
  • Use appropriate tools and processes for version control, dependency management, and automated testing to maintain code quality and traceability.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of experience in MATLAB and Simulink model-based development for control systems.
  • Strong proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow for control algorithm design and implementation.
  • Experience with embedded C development generated from Simulink or used alongside model-based designs.
  • Hands-on experience in embedded software development using Simulink, including code generation and integration.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform model-based design of control systems, including plant modeling and controller synthesis.
  • Experience implementing control algorithms for functions such as speed control, retarding control, economy modes, or operator assistance features.
