Embedded Applications Engineer information

What is an embedded applications engineer?

Embedded Applications Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain software that runs on embedded systems. These systems are specialized computing devices, such as microcontrollers or microprocessors, that are part of larger mechanical or electrical systems like automotive controls, medical devices, or consumer electronics. Embedded Applications Engineers work closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance. Their role often involves programming in languages like C or C++, debugging, testing, and sometimes developing real-time operating systems or device drivers.

What are some common challenges faced by embedded applications engineers when integrating software with hardware components?

Embedded Applications Engineers often encounter challenges related to hardware-software compatibility, debugging low-level code, and managing real-time performance constraints. Working closely with hardware teams, they must ensure that the software is optimized for specific devices and functions reliably under limited memory and processing power. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as engineers frequently troubleshoot issues that arise from unexpected hardware behaviors or environmental factors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded applications engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Embedded Applications Engineer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, embedded systems design, and a relevant engineering degree such as Electrical or Computer Engineering. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), microcontroller/microprocessor platforms, and debugging tools is typically required, along with certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer being advantageous. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills that help you tackle complex technical challenges and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing reliable, efficient embedded solutions that meet stringent performance and safety requirements.

Job description

At ASI, we are revolutionizing industries with state-of-the-art autonomous robotics solutions. Whether its construction, solar, agriculture, or something new, we deliver technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency. With our core values of Simplicity, Safety, Transparency, Humility, Attention to Detail, Autonomy and Growth guiding everything we do, we're shaping the future of automation in dynamic markets.
ASI is expanding its teams to support its current ramp-up across development work, customer projects, and product deployments. This is a full-time W-2 contract role.
The selected candidate will interview with ASI and work as an integrated member of the ASI team. W-2 employment, payroll, and benefits will be administered through one of ASI's staffing partners.
As an Embedded Software Engineer III, you will participate in the full software development lifecycle for embedded systems operating on autonomous robotic vehicles. You will develop features, diagnose defects, and integrate software across vehicle control, actuator, and sensor systems. With 3-5 years of embedded C/C++ experience, you bring the depth to work independently on complex real-time systems and the discipline to write clean, testable, reusable code.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain features for embedded applications on autonomous robotic vehicle platforms.
  • Diagnose and resolve defects across vehicle control, actuator, and perception sensor systems.
  • Participate in systems engineering to ensure smooth software integration across hardware and software stacks.
  • Write clean, reusable C and C++ code following SOLID principles and established design patterns.
  • Build and maintain unit, integration, and system simulation tests with a test-first approach.
  • Contribute to continuous refactoring and use distributed version control effectively.
  • Support fielded systems and collaborate with engineering teams to resolve integration issues.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5+ years designing and implementing embedded real-time software systems using C/C++.
  • Familiarity with large multithreaded embedded applications running on an RTOS.
  • Familiarity with electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, TCP, UDP, SPI, or RS232.
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 or sensor interfacing including GPS, LiDAR, RADAR, or ultrasonics.
  • Experience with Agile development, device drivers, or flash programming tools a plus.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity equipment continuously.
  • Ability to communicate and exchange information in person, via phone, and through electronic means.
  • Ability to traverse office, lab, data center, and field environments as required.
