What is an embedded AI engineer?

An Embedded AI Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and implements artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and models directly onto embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or edge devices. Their work involves optimizing AI solutions to run efficiently on hardware with limited computing resources, power, and memory. They collaborate with hardware engineers and software developers to integrate machine learning, computer vision, or other AI functionalities into products like smart appliances, autonomous vehicles, or IoT devices. Their expertise helps bring intelligent features directly to devices, enabling real-time decision-making without needing constant cloud connectivity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded AI engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded AI Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems, AI/ML algorithms, programming languages like C/C++ and Python, and typically a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with development tools such as TensorFlow Lite, ONNX, embedded Linux, and microcontroller platforms is essential, along with experience deploying AI models on resource-constrained devices. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and address real-world challenges. These skills ensure efficient integration of AI into embedded systems, enabling innovative, high-performance solutions for edge computing.

How does an embedded AI engineer typically collaborate with hardware and software teams during a project?

Embedded AI Engineers work closely with both hardware and software teams to ensure AI models are efficiently integrated into resource-constrained devices. They often collaborate with hardware engineers to optimize model performance based on device limitations like memory and processing power. At the same time, they coordinate with software developers to design efficient firmware and manage data pipelines. Regular cross-functional meetings and code reviews are common to address integration challenges and maintain alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

What is the difference between Embedded Ai Engineer vs Machine Learning Engineer?

Job description

eClinical Solutions is transforming clinical development with elluminateยฎ, our Clinical Data Cloud, helping life sciences organizations unify, analyze, and unlock the value of their data faster than ever before. By combining a modern cloud platform with expert data services, we empower smarter decisions across the clinical trial lifecycleโ€”accelerating innovation that ultimately improves patient outcomes.

Our engineering teams build enterprise-grade, revenue-generating products at the intersection of cloud, data, analytics, and emerging AI technologies. If youโ€™re excited about building sophisticated software that makes a real-world impact on healthcare, this is the place to do it.

You will make an impact

The Principal AI Engineer is primarily responsible for the design, implementation, and support of AI-powered and agentic capabilities embedded in the companyโ€™s elluminate software platform. These capabilities facilitate our clientsโ€™ work on clinical trials. The Principal AI Engineer will need strong analytical and technical skills to design and build production-grade solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs), agentic frameworks, and modern Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques in close collaboration with the companyโ€™s business clients. In addition, the candidate must serve as a Subject Matter Expert on the application of LLMs, agentic AI, and DL/ML to healthcare structured and unstructured data, both internally and with the companyโ€™s partners and clients.

Your day to day
  • Actively works with product and engineering to design and build breakthrough AI-powered and agentic capabilities for our clients using LLMs, agentic workflows, and modern DL/ML techniques
  • Design, prototype, develop, and test LLM-powered applications, agentic workflows, and predictive models using Python and modern AI frameworks to power critical product capabilities
  • Work with both structured and unstructured clinical trial data, including patient reports, trial documentation, and free text notes
  • Ideate, design, prototype, and develop solutions such as multi-agent workflows, RAG-based applications, document intelligence and summarization pipelines, and intelligent process automation
  • Design, prototype, and develop solutions using modern AI frameworks and libraries such as LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, PyTorch, Hugging Face Transformers, and scikit-learn
  • Champion AI-driven development practices across the team โ€” using AI coding assistants and agentic dev tools to accelerate prototyping, code generation, testing, and review
  • Build and maintain LLM, agentic, and ML pipelines, including prompt engineering, orchestration logic, and evaluation harnesses
  • Apply relevant evaluation frameworks, guardrails, and statistical measures for performance, quality, and error analysis of AI systems
  • Drive the entire workflow of multiple AI engineering projects
  • Enhance the experience and efficiency of our elluminate software platform users
  • Work with our Engineering team to integrate AI capabilities into our elluminate software platform
  • Work with the MLOps/AIOps team to deploy LLM, agentic, and ML systems in production and to track performance, cost, and quality
  • Consult with and assist our software development and biometrics teams to consume the results of these AI systems
  • Ensure data quality throughout all stages of acquisition and processing
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert in Generative AI, agentic systems, and applied Machine Learning
  • Keep up to date with the latest research and tooling in LLMs, agentic AI, and ML
  • Educate other team members in modern AI techniques and best practices
  • Publish and present work and contribute to companyโ€™s intellectual property
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Physics, or a related field; Masterโ€™s or Doctorate degree preferred
  • Accomplished engineer with deep technical credibility and handsโ€‘on implementation skills building LLM-powered applications, agentic workflows, and production AI systems; familiarity with modern Deep Learning and Machine Learning techniques (transformers, RAG, fineโ€‘tuning, evaluation)
  • Extensive experience shipping production software in a healthcare or lifeโ€‘sciences setting; comfortable working alongside clinicians and domain experts
  • Inโ€‘depth knowledge and experience working with healthcare and/or clinical trials data
