What is an embedded AI engineer?

An Embedded AI Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and implements artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms and models directly onto embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or edge devices. Their work involves optimizing AI solutions to run efficiently on hardware with limited computing resources, power, and memory. They collaborate with hardware engineers and software developers to integrate machine learning, computer vision, or other AI functionalities into products like smart appliances, autonomous vehicles, or IoT devices. Their expertise helps bring intelligent features directly to devices, enabling real-time decision-making without needing constant cloud connectivity.

What is the difference between Embedded Ai Engineer vs Machine Learning Engineer?

Common Search & ComparisonYesNo

Embedded Ai Engineers focus on integrating AI algorithms into embedded hardware and IoT devices, requiring knowledge of hardware constraints and embedded programming. Machine Learning Engineers develop models primarily for software applications and data analysis. While both roles involve AI, Embedded Ai Engineers specialize in hardware-software integration within embedded systems, whereas Machine Learning Engineers work on developing and deploying AI models in software environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded AI engineer?

To thrive as an Embedded AI Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems, AI/ML algorithms, programming languages like C/C++ and Python, and typically a degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with development tools such as TensorFlow Lite, ONNX, embedded Linux, and microcontroller platforms is essential, along with experience deploying AI models on resource-constrained devices. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and address real-world challenges. These skills ensure efficient integration of AI into embedded systems, enabling innovative, high-performance solutions for edge computing.

How does an embedded AI engineer typically collaborate with hardware and software teams during a project?

Embedded AI Engineers work closely with both hardware and software teams to ensure AI models are efficiently integrated into resource-constrained devices. They often collaborate with hardware engineers to optimize model performance based on device limitations like memory and processing power. At the same time, they coordinate with software developers to design efficient firmware and manage data pipelines. Regular cross-functional meetings and code reviews are common to address integration challenges and maintain alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

Role & Team

At Overstory, we're scaling a product that helps utilities prevent wildfires and keep the lights on, and we're shaping the next generation of AI-native experiences that will define where our product goes next. We're looking for a Staff Product Manager, AI to lead this important 0-1 work and drive this evolution forward.
Reporting to the Director of Product, this individual will be the founding product partner for a small team of engineers and designers, working hand-in-hand with our customer on the ground in the US. They will own the problem end-to-end, from first interviews, to early prototypes, to the first version of a product utilities pay for and rely on. This is a great opportunity for someone who is both a thinker and a doer: someone who cares deeply about the craft of product, who likes shipping fast as the best way to learn, and who is energized by getting AI into customers' hands and learning what actually creates value.

Time Zone Requirement: United States & Canada (NST, AST, EST & CST). Some travel to customer sites required. Comfortable maintaining 3-4 hours of overlap European working hours for collaboration with the broader Overstory team.

What You'll Do
  • Lead 0-to-1 product development for a new AI-native grid resilience product, from earliest problem framing through to first version shipped and used by customers.
  • Decide what to build (and just as importantly, what not to) by combining customer discovery, AI feasibility, and Overstory's broader vision.
  • Design and ship agentic, AI-native workflows in tight loops with engineering and design, favoring prototypes, evaluations, and live customer reactions over long specs.
  • Define the success metrics for this new area, set what "good" looks like, and hold the team honest as we iterate.
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with the broader Overstory team, making the bets visible, the learnings shareable, and the trade-offs explicit.
  • Contribute to the broader product strategy at Overstory as we figure out how this new area connects to, and reinforces, the core product
Skills & Experience
  • 8+ years of product management experience, with a track record that proves both craft and shipping velocity
  • 0-to-1 experience, at a startup, or spinning up a new product line or business unit inside a larger company.
  • AI-native solution design: you think agentic-first, combining models, tools, retrieval, and workflows into coherent systems (not "LLM as a feature").
  • Hands-on experience shipping agentic AI products in production. You're comfortable with LLMs, evals, prompts, and the messy middle of turning AI capabilities into reliable customer experiences, and you can discuss model behavior, evaluation, and trade-offs with engineers.
  • Proven track record building customer-facing products that real users rely on every day.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication. You bring clarity to ambiguity, make decisions visible, and bring teams and customers along as things shift.
  • A passion for the urgency of solving our climate crisis.
Nice-to-haves
  • Experience building B2B or enterprise products, especially with customers in operationally complex industries (utilities, energy, infrastructure, logistics).
  • Experience as a forward-deployed or embedded PM, working hand-in-hand with one or two strategic customers

Note: We believe that all people are capable of great things. We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all of the requirements that are listed within this job description.

What we offer
  • Competitive, location-specific compensation and benefits
  • Flexible, autonomous and collaborative working environment rooted in trust - we build our work days around our lives, not the other way around
  • Home office stipend, coworking and ongoing education budgets
  • A company culture that genuinely embodies each of our core values
  • To be part of truly mission-driven work that reduces wildfires, protects earth's natural resources and helps solve our climate crisis
