Industry UsagePrimarily focused on body preservationBroader funeral service support roles

Embalming Work involves specialized body preservation techniques requiring a licensed embalmer, focusing on embalming and restorative art. Mortuary Technicians support funeral services with body transportation and preparation but typically do not perform embalming. Both roles are essential in funeral homes but differ in certification requirements and primary duties.

Can I be just an embalming worker?

Yes, it is possible to work solely as an embalming technician or assistant, focusing on embalming procedures under the supervision of a licensed embalmer. However, many roles in the funeral industry combine embalming with other responsibilities such as preparation and transportation, and licensing or certification may be required depending on the state or country. Specializing as an embalming worker typically involves training in anatomy, chemistry, and the use of embalming tools and chemicals.

How long is schooling to become an embalming work?

To become an embalmer, individuals typically complete a mortuary science program, which usually takes about 1 to 2 years for an associate degree. Afterward, they often need to obtain state licensure, which may require passing a written and practical exam, and some states require apprenticeships or internships as part of the training process.

What qualifications do you need to embalm as an embalming worker?

Embalming workers typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and must complete state-approved embalming training or apprenticeship programs. Certification or licensure is often required, which involves passing exams that test knowledge of anatomy, chemistry, and sanitation practices. Skills in handling embalming tools and understanding health and safety regulations are also essential.
