What is an email developer?

An Email Developer is a specialized professional who designs, codes, tests, and optimizes email campaigns and newsletters for marketing or communication purposes. They use HTML and CSS to create responsive and visually appealing emails that render correctly across various email clients and devices. Email Developers also work closely with designers, marketers, and project managers to ensure emails meet branding guidelines and achieve desired outcomes, such as increasing engagement or conversions.

What does an email developer do?

An email developer designs and builds email blasts for clients and marketing teams. In this career, your duties primarily revolve around creating templates in HTML. This involves having an eye for visual design as well as the technical capability for coding. When coding the email, you have to account for a variety of different browsers, text options, and email clients, which makes it a very different task than coding a web page. Furthermore, you need to be aware of the limits of the email service provider your organization is using, and you must stay up-to-date with any new regulations regarding spam and industry standards regarding HTML.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an email developer?

To thrive as an Email Developer, you need expertise in HTML, CSS, and responsive design, along with a strong understanding of email marketing best practices. Familiarity with email service providers (ESPs) like Mailchimp or Salesforce Marketing Cloud, as well as tools for testing and troubleshooting emails across clients, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills for collaborating with marketing teams and ensuring high-quality deliverables. These skills are essential for creating engaging, functional, and accessible email campaigns that drive business results and user engagement.

What are some common challenges email developers face when working with different email clients, and how can they be addressed?

Email Developers often encounter inconsistencies in how various email clients render HTML and CSS, which can make it challenging to ensure emails look and function as intended for all recipients. To address this, developers typically use inline styles, tables for layout, and test across multiple platforms and devices using tools like Litmus or Email on Acid. Staying up to date with client-specific quirks and best practices is essential, as is collaborating closely with designers and marketers to align on feasible design elements. Proactively addressing these challenges helps ensure a consistent and accessible experience for all users.

What is the difference between Email Developer vs Email Marketing Specialist?

AspectEmail DeveloperEmail Marketing Specialist
Primary FocusDesigning and coding email templates and campaignsPlanning, executing, and analyzing email marketing strategies
SkillsHTML, CSS, responsive design, email client compatibilityMarketing strategy, analytics, copywriting, segmentation
CredentialsWeb development or coding experience often preferredMarketing or communications background often preferred
Work EnvironmentMarketing teams, agencies, or in-house departmentsMarketing teams, agencies, or in-house departments

While both roles are involved in email campaigns, Email Developers focus on creating and coding the email templates, ensuring they display correctly across devices. Email Marketing Specialists handle the overall strategy, content, and analysis of campaigns. Understanding the differences helps organizations assign the right tasks and professionals for successful email marketing efforts.

How much do email developers make?

Email developers typically earn between $50,000 and $85,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and skill level. Senior roles or those with expertise in HTML, CSS, and email marketing platforms can command higher salaries, especially in larger organizations or tech hubs.

Job description

Description

For the Dev position I'd say the top three technical skills are fluency with SQL and Python, familiarity with team project work via git/source control, familiarity working with Snowflake/web based integration tools (Airflow/Workato/Mulesoft).

Day to day tasks will likely be tasked with a given legacy integration, deconstruct the requirements (since there's no documentation), then rebuild it using Workato following new design principals (pub/sub, API). We have a couple legacy web apps that if we can get to, would be helping to rebuild them within AWS.

Position Details

A candidate for this position will focus on refactoring legacy workflows—transitioning traditional flat-file transfers and batch ETLs into modern, API-driven, pub/sub, and orchestrated integration solutions.

Basic Function

Under limited direction, design, develop, and support complex system integrations, pipelines, web applications, and cloud-based data systems within the district’s enterprise environment. Serve as a technical expert in web application development lifecycle and ETL orchestration. Collaborate with other team members to ensure adherence to data governance standards, and produce reliable and supportable infrastructure aligned with District priorities.

Representative Duties

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

● Design, build, and maintain scalable integrations and solutions sourcing data from SIS, HR, Finance, transportation, assessment, vendor platforms, and other enterprise systems. E

● Design, build, and maintain custom web applications and agentic workflows.

● Leverage and inform the development of Snowflake data models. E

● Manage integrations using tools such as dbt, Workato, SQL, Python scripts, APIs, and cloud-native services; monitor workflows and resolve data pipeline issues. E

● Ensure adherence to data governance policies, privacy requirements, and security standards including FERPA, role-based access, and metadata documentation. E

● Support the development and implementation of districtwide data strategies, standards, and best practices. E

● Analyze complex data issues, troubleshoot system errors, and perform root-cause analysis to identify long-term solutions. E

● Demonstrate a commitment to the Portland Public Schools Racial Equity and Social Justice Commitment by applying the PPS Racial Educational Equity Policy and RESJ Framework in daily practices and data governance decisions. E

● Maintain current knowledge of Snowflake capabilities, cloud data engineering trends, emerging technologies, and industry best practices; participate in professional development. E

● Perform related duties as assigned.

“E” indicates essential duties required for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of

● SQL, dbt, API-driven integrations and ELT/ETL concepts. Cloud environments (AWS/Azure) and data tools (Python, Workato, Airflow, Git).

● Modern web development, hosting and Software Development Life Cycle.

● Data governance, metadata management, role-based access control, and FERPA requirements.

● Technical documentation, and Agile development practices.

● Equity-centered data practices and culturally responsive communication.

Ability to

● Design, build, and maintain efficient, reliable scripts and automations.

● Use programming languages and tools (Python, SQL, dbt, Git, etc.) to develop integrations and data manipulation.

● Analyze complex data structures, identify system issues, and implement solutions.

● Collaborate with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts to nontechnical audiences.

● Ensure data accuracy, security, and compliance with district and legal requirements.

● Support the District’s Racial Educational Equity Policy and contribute to an inclusive work environment.

● Work independently, maintain confidentiality, and deliver high-quality customer service.

Education and Experience

Education

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information science, data engineering, or a closely related field. A master’s degree in a related discipline is desirable.

Experience

Three (3) or more years of combined experience conducting technology business process analysis, development and integration for multiple platforms, and implementing end-user quality assurance test plans for software acceptance across multiple platforms.

Experience with public-sector or K–12 education environments is a plus. Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.
