What is an Elixir engineer?

An Elixir Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining applications using the Elixir programming language. Elixir is known for its concurrency, scalability, and fault-tolerance, making it a popular choice for real-time web applications, distributed systems, and backend services. Elixir Engineers often work with the Phoenix framework and are responsible for designing, developing, testing, and deploying high-performance applications. They may also optimize existing code, ensure system reliability, and collaborate with teams to implement best practices.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an Elixir engineer?

To thrive as an Elixir Engineer, you need strong programming skills in Elixir and the Erlang/OTP ecosystem, along with a solid understanding of functional programming principles and concurrent system design. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, experience with Phoenix Framework, and knowledge of deployment tools such as Docker are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively within development teams and address complex technical challenges. These skills and qualities are essential for building scalable, reliable, and maintainable applications in fast-paced software environments.

How does an Elixir engineer typically collaborate with other team members in a software development environment?

As an Elixir Engineer, you will often work closely with backend and frontend developers, DevOps engineers, and product managers to design and deliver scalable applications. Collaboration is usually facilitated through regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and pair programming sessions, especially when integrating Elixir services with other parts of a system. You may also be responsible for writing technical documentation and assisting in onboarding team members less familiar with Elixir. Open communication and a willingness to share knowledge are key, as Elixir teams often prioritize code quality and functional programming best practices.

Job description

Summary
The Forward Deployed Engineer is a first-class builder who ships production code into Hatch's core codebase, internal tooling, and the integration layer that connects Hatch's products to client systems. The primary focus is Hatch's Voice AI product.
"Forward deployed" describes where you work: embedded alongside our most strategic clients to understand their problems firsthand, identify where a client implementation problem points to a change in Hatch's core code, and ship improvements that make Hatch's voice product better for everyone.
This is a code-level, hands-on role sitting close to customers. You partner directly with Product to work through implementations for Hatch's most strategic clients, translate what you learn into core product changes, and push those changes into production. You'll be deep in the build, held to production-grade standards, and given a genuine seat at the R&D table.
This opportunity is Hybrid working from the NYC Office (Soho)
We'd love to have you apply, even if you don't feel you meet every single requirement in this posting. At Hatch, we're looking for great people, not just those who simply check off all the boxes.
What you'll do
  • Partner directly with sales execution to scope complex integration projects. Navigate the gap between a client's business objectives and what their technology ecosystem supports by diving deep into comprehensive developer documentation.
  • Ship production-quality code. Build features to a first-class bar, even when internal and never exposed to a client. Some of what you build will graduate to an R&D team to own; build it to that standard from the start.
  • Use and extend Hatch's existing tools and automation services to bring clients to success - writing code in our platform, building integrations and connectors that link Hatch to client systems (direct API integrations, webhook endpoints, event-based triggers), or building on existing automation tooling.
  • Own technically complex onboardings end-to-end: CRMs with no Hatch connector, multi-system orchestrations, custom business logic, and event-based triggers - all while looking for the reusable pattern underneath. No two implementations are exactly alike.
  • QA and test all implementations before go-live; own monitoring and iteration post-launch. Know when something you built breaks or degrades before the customer does.
  • Move fast and push fixes. Work largely unencumbered, pushing PRs into Hatch's codebase without heavy oversight. When you find a change that makes the product better, build it and ship it.
  • Work alongside Product to turn implementation learnings into the product. Help surface recurring patterns that call for dedicated R&D investment - and where something belongs natively, build the first-class version yourself and hand it off to an R&D team to own.
  • Act as a primary technical consultant for our clients, including onsite visits to understand their business needs, present architectural solutions, and ensure successful deployment.

What it takes to succeed
  • 1-4 years of software engineering experience, with hands-on experience building or working with Voice AI systems. Consulting or client-facing experience is a plus.
  • Comfortable in Python and/or Elixir, with Go in scope and experience using and building on existing automation tooling, both internal and external (e.g., n8n), alongside core languages.
  • Proven ability to navigate a broad technology ecosystem and comprehensive developer documentation. You can tell the difference between a problem that warrants a change to Hatch's core code and one that should live in middleware or automation tooling.
  • Great communication skills with business and technical audiences. When requirements are ambiguous, you resolve them before building, not after.
  • Hold yourself to a high bar. Because you ship quickly and with real autonomy, correctness is on you. Implementations should be right, not just working - complete and consistent, not merely functional.
  • Provide clear, proactive status updates on your active builds: where you are, what's blocking you, and what the customer needs to know from a technical standpoint. You own the technical work and the client's technical relationship, not project management.
  • Experience with the modern voice AI stack is a plus: real-time voice agents, telephony, text-to-speech and voice quality, LLM orchestration, and CRM/booking integrations.

What you'll get
  • Based on the anticipated level of experience we are seeking, we expect the compensation range for this role to be between $144,000 and $200,000
  • Full responsibility for projects from day one, a collaborative team, and a dynamic work environment.
  • This opportunity has the option to be fully remote in all locations across the US or Hybrid from the Soho NYC office
  • Effective your first day: Full medical, vision, and dental
  • Mental health support and services via Modern Health
  • 15 days PTO (accrual begins on date of hire and increases with 2+ years of tenure thereafter), 12 paid holidays, plus one floating holiday
  • Up to 14 weeks of parental leave
  • Monthly wellness stipend
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan
  • Employee stock purchase plan
  • Professional development reimbursement
  • Work from home reimbursement

Why Hatch
  • Shape the future of AI-driven customer service
  • Build alongside founders and leaders who value speed, ownership, and ambition
  • Solve challenging problems and see the impact on real businesses and customers
  • Join a team of builders who care about great engineering, fast execution, and each other
