Elixir Engineers and Ruby Developers often share similar credentials and work environments, but they focus on different programming languages and application types. Elixir Engineers specialize in scalable, real-time systems using Elixir, while Ruby Developers typically work on web applications with Ruby on Rails. Both roles are vital in modern software development, but their industry applications and technical focuses differ.

What is an Elixir Engineer?

An Elixir Engineer is a software developer who specializes in building and maintaining applications using the Elixir programming language. Elixir is known for its concurrency, scalability, and fault-tolerance, making it a popular choice for real-time web applications, distributed systems, and backend services. Elixir Engineers often work with the Phoenix framework and are responsible for designing, developing, testing, and deploying high-performance applications. They may also optimize existing code, ensure system reliability, and collaborate with teams to implement best practices.

How does an Elixir Engineer typically collaborate with other team members in a software development environment?

As an Elixir Engineer, you will often work closely with backend and frontend developers, DevOps engineers, and product managers to design and deliver scalable applications. Collaboration is usually facilitated through regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and pair programming sessions, especially when integrating Elixir services with other parts of a system. You may also be responsible for writing technical documentation and assisting in onboarding team members less familiar with Elixir. Open communication and a willingness to share knowledge are key, as Elixir teams often prioritize code quality and functional programming best practices.

Job description

This role is located in Somerville, MA - We are a hybrid work environment and are in the office 3+ days/per week.
Tulip, the leader in AI-native frontline operations, is helping companies around the world equip their workforce with composable, connected apps, leading to higher quality work, improved efficiency, and end-to-end traceability across operations. Tulip's cloud-native, no-code platform, powered by embedded AI, is driving the digital transformation of industrial environments through composable, human-centric solutions that go beyond disrupting the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) category.
A spinoff out of MIT, Tulip is headquartered in Somerville, MA, with offices in Germany, Hungary, Singapore, and Israel. Tulip has been recognized as a World Economic Forum Global Innovator, a 2024 Deloitte Technology Fast award winner, one of Energage's Top Workplaces USA, and one of Built In Boston's "Best Places to Work" and "Best Midsize Places to Work."
Tulip is AI-native for our customers; we expect the same of ourselves. Our engineers use AI like a keyboard - reflexively, throughout the day, to clear the toil and leave room for thinking. We ship with Claude Code, treat agent workflows as a real part of our development loop, and evaluate each other on how well we orchestrate and validate AI-generated work - not how many lines we personally type. If you've already changed how you build software because of these tools, you'll fit; if you haven't yet, this isn't the right role.
About You:
  • You're a builder at heart, someone who thrives on pushing product forward and delighting users.
  • You're fluent (or want to be) with AI coding tools and treat them as part of your daily workflow - drafting with Claude Code, reviewing AI-generated PRs with the same rigor as a teammate's, and figuring out when to lean on an agent and when not to.
  • You are a collaborative team player, whether working independently or as part of a group.
  • You have a product mindset and an empathy for the end user.
  • You love a good challenge and learning new things.
  • You are comfortable navigating a large technology stack to understand how its features work and how they contribute to different parts of the platform.

What skills do I need?
  • 3-5+ years of software engineering experience, ideally at a SaaS enterprise software company.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript is required.
  • Familiarity with API design and integration (RESTful services).
  • Proficiency in unit testing, integration testing, and debugging practices.
  • Comfortable using AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot, or equivalent) to land production PRs not as a novelty, but as part of how you already work.
  • Comfortable serving as subject matter expert for the systems you build (with tools like Grafana, Datadog, or the equivalent)
  • Works well both independently and as part of a team.

Nice to Have:
  • Familiarity with our tech stack - including React, Redux, Node.js, Golang, Elixir, Electron, MongoDB, Postgres, and Docker.
  • Experience with machine tools and/or manufacturing industry.
  • Background working in startups.
  • Understanding of database design principles and optimization.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ship production features through AI-assisted workflows using Claude Code to draft, refactor, and review code, and treating "validate the agent's output" as a core part of the job rather than an afterthought.
  • Write and maintain clean, high-quality, and efficient code that aligns with project specifications.
  • Execute comprehensive testing and seamless deployment of programs and systems.
  • Communicate technical information clearly and effectively with fellow team members.
  • Partner with engineers across the engineering organization to design systems, debate trade-offs, and review each other's work, including AI-generated work, with care.
  • Successfully integrate various software components and external third-party programs.
  • Proactively troubleshoot, debug, and enhance existing software solutions.
  • Collect and analyze user feedback to inform product evolution.
  • Propose and implement strategic improvements to our software.
  • Develop and maintain thorough technical documentation for internal reference and reporting.

Key Collaborators:
  • Engineering
  • Product Design
  • Product Management
