Role Overview
We're looking for a hands-on Electronics Engineering Research Specialist to assist with the design, development, and validation of next-generation aerospace sensing platforms.
You'll contribute to the full hardware lifecycle - from concept and schematic design through prototyping, testing, and production handoff - working closely with firmware, mechanical, and systems teams.
This role is ideal for a recent Ph.D. graduate with a deep understanding of sensor design - whether electromagnetic, ultrasonic, or electro-optical - who's ready to learn and grow within a multidisciplinary aerospace engineering environment.
You'll help build reliable, low-power electronic sensors that enable flight safety in challenging and mission-critical applications.
This is a full-time position for a term of two years, supported by the Mitacs Accelerate program in collaboration with the University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Hardware Research & Development
- Research state-of-the art methodologies for electronically-controlled sensors.
- Design and develop high-speed electronic circuits for high-fidelity sensing.
- Assist with implementing low-power designs for battery-operated and wireless platforms (BLE, Li-Ion/NiMH).
- Create schematics, perform PCB layout (in Altium Designer or KiCad), and support bring-up, integration and verification testing.
- Participate in component selection, prototyping, and design optimization for performance, manufacturability, and reliability.
System Integration & Testing
- Collaborate with firmware, mechanical, and systems teams on cross-functional integration and debugging.
- Support lab and field testing for prototype systems.
- Conduct testing, validation, and troubleshooting of electronic hardware and subsystems.
Quality & Compliance
- Contribute to design documentation and revision control.
- Support EMI/EMC, environmental, and reliability testing as needed.
- Assist in meeting relevant aerospace and regulatory standards.
Collaboration & Growth
- Work within a fast-paced, collaborative engineering team.
- Contribute ideas to improve product design, efficiency, and reliability.
