An electronic security technician installs, maintains, and troubleshoots electronic security systems such as alarms, CCTV, access control, and integrated security solutions.Role and Responsibilities

Electronic security technicians are responsible for the installation, servicing, and maintenance of electronic security systems across residential, commercial, industrial, and government environments. Their work typically includes:

  • Installing and configuring alarms, CCTV cameras, access control systems, intercoms, and integrated security solutions

  • Performing fault-finding, troubleshooting, and system upgrades

  • Ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards

  • Collaborating with clients to provide technical support and customer service

  • Integrating security systems with IT networks and cloud-based platforms as systems become more IP-based and connected

Training and Qualifications

To become an electronic security technician, individuals often pursue a Security Systems Apprenticeship, a nationally accredited program lasting around four years. Apprentices complete a Certificate III in Security Equipment while gaining on-the-job experience under qualified technicians Key skills developed include:

  • Electronics and electrical knowledge

  • IT networking and system integration

  • Problem-solving and diagnostic skills

  • Customer service and communication
    Additional certifications or licenses may be required depending on the region and type of security work, especially for government or defense projects
