What is electronic engineering?

Electronic engineering is a branch of engineering that focuses on the design, development, and testing of electronic circuits, devices, and systems. It covers a wide range of technologies, including semiconductors, microprocessors, telecommunications, control systems, and embedded systems. Electronic engineers work on everything from consumer electronics and medical devices to industrial automation and communication networks. Their work is crucial for the advancement of modern technology and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electronic engineer?

To thrive as an Electronic Engineer, a solid background in electronics theory, circuit design, and a degree in electronic or electrical engineering are essential. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as MATLAB, SPICE, PCB design software, and relevant certifications like IEEE membership are highly valued. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills that set top performers apart. These skills and qualifications ensure engineers can design reliable electronic systems, innovate solutions, and collaborate effectively in technology-driven environments.

What are some typical challenges electronic engineers face when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Electronic engineers often collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, software developers, and project managers. One common challenge is ensuring seamless integration between electronic components and other system parts, which requires clear communication and thorough documentation. Additionally, balancing design constraints such as cost, manufacturability, and performance can be complex when multiple disciplines are involved. Staying adaptable and proactive in cross-functional meetings helps electronic engineers contribute effectively to team success.

What is the difference between Electronic Engineering vs Electrical Engineering?

AspectElectronic EngineeringElectrical Engineering
FocusDesign and development of electronic circuits, devices, and systemsGeneration, transmission, and distribution of electrical power
Work EnvironmentElectronics labs, manufacturing facilities, R&D centersPower plants, electrical substations, industrial sites
Common CertificationsIEEE certifications, professional engineer licenseIEEE certifications, professional engineer license

Electronic Engineering primarily focuses on designing electronic circuits and devices, while Electrical Engineering deals with power systems and electrical infrastructure. Both fields share similar credentials and often work in overlapping environments, but their core applications differ significantly.

What jobs can an electronic engineer do?

An electronic engineer can work in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining electronic systems and devices such as communication systems, consumer electronics, medical equipment, and embedded systems. They often work in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing, utilizing skills in circuit design, programming, and troubleshooting. Certifications like EIT or PE can enhance job prospects, and proficiency with tools such as CAD software and oscilloscopes is common.

What kind of work do electronic engineers do?

Electronic engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing of electronic devices and systems such as circuit boards, communication equipment, and control systems. They often work with tools like schematic design software and may need knowledge of standards and certifications relevant to their industry. Their work environment can include laboratories, manufacturing facilities, and offices, with project timelines varying based on complexity.

PDS Tech Commercial is partnering with a leading innovator in the aviation and aerospace industry to hire an experienced FAA Repair & Overhaul (R&O) Electronic Engineering Technician for a direct hire opportunity. If you're passionate about electronics, precision workmanship, and supporting aircraft safety and reliability, this is your chance to join a team where your technical expertise makes a real impact.

In this role, you'll perform the assembly, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of aircraft electronic components that help keep fleets operating safely and efficiently. Working within an FAA Repair Station, you'll collaborate with skilled technicians and engineers to ensure products meet the highest quality and regulatory standards.

What You'll Do

As an FAA R&O Electronic Engineering Technician, you will:

  • Assemble, disassemble, troubleshoot, repair, rework, reassemble, and test aircraft electronic components in support of FAA Repair Station operations.

  • Analyze component failures and recommend corrective actions to restore products to service in compliance with FAA and applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Perform manual assembly, hand soldering, automated assembly operations, and electronic testing using specialized equipment.

  • Operate automated test equipment (ATE) and inspect products to verify quality and functionality.

  • Perform machine and production line setup, feeder repairs, and first-level preventive maintenance on manufacturing equipment.

  • Identify assembly process issues and implement or recommend effective solutions to improve quality and efficiency.

  • Follow established manufacturing procedures while exercising sound judgment when resolving technical challenges.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and utilize computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and documentation control systems.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet production goals, quality standards, and delivery schedules.

  • Assist in training and guiding team members while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma with additional technical coursework after high school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 4–5 years of relevant electronics manufacturing, repair, or overhaul experience.

  • Required site-specific certifications as defined by operations.

  • Strong understanding of board assembly processes and electronic product manufacturing workflows.

  • In-depth knowledge of soldering specifications, SMT (Surface Mount Technology) processing systems, and product quality standards.

  • Experience setting up, operating, calibrating, and maintaining assembly equipment, hand soldering tools, and manufacturing equipment.

  • Ability to troubleshoot electronic assemblies and recognize manufacturing process issues.

  • Knowledge of in-circuit testing (ICT) and functional test fixturing.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and electronic documentation control systems.

  • Strong communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently under general supervision while managing multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an FAA Repair Station or other regulated aerospace manufacturing environment.

  • Advanced knowledge of electronic manufacturing systems and production processes.

This position is performed in a manufacturing environment and may involve:

  • Exposure to machinery, noise, dust, chemicals, and varying temperatures.

  • Extended periods of standing or sitting while performing detailed electronic assembly and inspection.

  • Repetitive hand movements requiring fine motor skills and precise hand-eye coordination.

  • Operation of specialized manufacturing, soldering, and testing equipment.

  • Occasional lifting and material handling.

  • Strict adherence to all health, safety, and FAA quality requirements.
