What is electron microscopy?
What are electron microscopy jobs?
Electron microscopy involves creating high-resolution images of specimens. Electron microscopy technicians use an electron microscope in a laboratory setting to make these images. As a technician in this specialized field, you work with both biological and non-biological specimens, and your duties focus on creating images for research or medical diagnosis purposes. While using the electron microscope, you track and prepare samples and ensure that the resulting pictures meet the needs of the researcher or medical professional who plans to use them. Your responsibilities include maintaining the microscopes, handling samples, and performing other lab tasks.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electron microscopy specialist, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by electron microscopy professionals, and how can they be addressed?
What is the difference between Electron Microscopy vs Transmission Electron Microscopy?
| Aspect | Electron Microscopy | Transmission Electron Microscopy |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a degree in materials science, biology, or related fields; specialized training in microscopy techniques | Similar credentials; often requires additional training in sample preparation and electron optics |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, research facilities, industrial labs | High-vacuum environment, specialized labs for detailed imaging |
| Usage | General term for electron-based imaging techniques | Specific type of electron microscopy focused on thin sample imaging |
Electron Microscopy is a broad field encompassing various techniques, including Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). TEM is a specialized form of electron microscopy used for high-resolution imaging of thin samples. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work environments, TEM technicians focus specifically on preparing and operating TEM instruments for detailed internal structure analysis.

Job description
Requisition Id 16869
Overview:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to use advanced scanning probe microscopy for the development and application of multiscale excitonic probes. In this role, you will study buried interfaces, defects, and charge-transfer processes in vertically integrated semiconductor structures. The research will focus on low-dimensional and emerging materials incorporated into complex microelectronic and optoelectronic architectures, with particular emphasis on interfaces between two-dimensional and conventional semiconductor materials. This position resides in the Functional Atomic Force Microscopy (FAFM) group in the Nanomaterials Characterization Section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Science Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and you will join our team as part of the Department of Energy’s Nanoscale Science Research Center MEERCAT project.
As part of our research team, you will investigate excitonic and electronic behavior across multiple length and time scales using a combination of photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM), photoluminescence, and electroluminescence spectroscopy. These measurements will be correlated with complementary techniques such as Kelvin probe force microscopy, scanning microwave impedance microscopy, cathodoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, and electron microscopy to connect local chemical, structural, optical, and electronic properties. The research will contribute to the development of multiscale characterization strategies for understanding interfaces and defects that affect the performance of next-generation semiconductor devices. The candidate will collaborate with researchers across CNMS, ORNL, and the broader NSRC network working in materials synthesis, device fabrication, theoretical modeling, and complementary characterization.
We are particularly interested in candidates with backgrounds in optical spectroscopy, scanning probe microscopy, semiconductor materials, or condensed matter physics who are motivated to work across disciplinary boundaries and develop new experimental capabilities.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Design and conduct experiments combining nanoscale photonics, optical spectroscopy, and scanning probe microscopy.
- Advance capabilities for specialized scanning probe microscopy methods
- Work as part of a dynamic team conducting research that advances and develops cutting-edge characterization capabilities to improve our understanding of interfaces and defects in low-dimensional heterostructures.
- Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years
Preferred Qualifications:
- Research experience or demonstrated knowledge in at least one of the following areas:
- Nanoscale optical spectroscopy, including photoluminescence, electroluminescence, cathodoluminescence, or near-field optical microscopy such as SNOM.
- Two-dimensional or other low-dimensional materials.
- Semiconductor or microelectronics-relevant materials and devices.
- Proficiency in surface and interface characterization using atomic force microscopy.
- Experience in materials characterization techniques such as Raman and scanning electron microscopy.
- Data analysis skills using Python, MATLAB, or similar platforms.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:
For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
Postdocs:
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
