Join the power movement as a Senior R&D Electromagnetic Analysis Engineer
 
The R&D team's mission at CFS is to vet potential technical solutions in order to guide the overall SPARC subsystem design, and plan for the technology needs of future fusion power plants and spin-off projects.  The Electromagnetics Analysis Engineer within the R&D team will perform electromagnetic (EM) analysis of superconducting magnets using finite element and other methods. This analysis includes the non-linear, anisotropic behavior of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) in both insulated and non-insulated magnet systems. Incorporating complex multi-physics (heat transfer, fluids, mechanics, etc) system behavior into simplified, elegant network circuit and/or FEA models are also crucial to modelling the multi-physics behavior of superconducting magnets. The Electromagnetics Analysis Engineer will also work with a team of experimentalists and engineers to validate simulations against experimental data. Familiarity with both commercial finite element analysis software packages and developing custom in-house code in python and extensions of commercial packages is necessary.
 
This work is conducted within a multi-disciplinary team of physicists and engineers. Participation and clear, concise communication in design and test activities is necessary to both inform design decisions and correlate models to experiment.
What you'll do:
  • Perform electromagnetic analysis of superconducting magnets and inform design decisions
  • Work with experimental teams on instrumentation, measurement, and correlation of experiment to analysis
  • Develop new numerical tools, as needed, to facilitate multi-objective design optimization of high-temperature superconducting magnets
  • Perform non-linear, highly-anisotropic E&M simulations in complicated geometries
  • Identify enabling technologies in the modeling and construction of high-temperature superconducting magnets
  • Prepare reports and presentations as necessary
  • Mentor and guide new members of the team in magnet design and analysis as necessary
What we're looking for:
  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in electrical engineering or another relevant field with an EM background (physics, mechanical engineering, etc.)
  • 7+ years of experience modeling electromagnetics using finite element method
  • A strong background and theoretical understanding of computational electromagnetic analysis
  • Experience modeling non-linear physics
  • Experience with commercial finite element tools. COMSOL preferred
  • The ability to customize commercial finite element tools or develop new in-house codes in modern programming languages such Python/MATLAB/C/C++
  • Able to quickly grasp experimental setups and analyze data to validate models
  • An ability to clearly express and critique ideas
  • Ability to innovate towards solutions to complex problems

$110,000 - $185,000 a year
