The Electrician 'A' exercises independent judgment to plan and perform all work involved in the layout, installation, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment and systems across the University campus. Working from blueprints, schematics, and verbal instruction, the Electrician diagnoses faults, completes repairs to code, and supports both routine preventive maintenance and emergency response. The role operates with limited supervision and is expected to complete assignments safely, accurately, and in compliance with the National Electrical Code and all applicable University and regulatory standards.
Education and Experience

• Advanced knowledge of the electrical trade equivalent to completion of an accredited apprenticeship program.
• At least three (3) years of additional practical journey-level experience beyond apprenticeship.
• Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code and applicable New York State and local codes.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
• A valid New York State driver's license in good standing, maintained throughout employment.
• Ability to operate vehicles with both manual and automatic transmissions.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and communicate effectively with supervisors, trades, and building occupants

Skills and Knowledge

• Experience in an institutional, higher-education, healthcare, or large campus environment.
• Experience with medium-voltage distribution systems, switchgear, and substations.
• Familiarity with building automation, fire alarm, or emergency power systems.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification; NFPA 70E arc-flash safety training.
• Experience using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for work orders.

Responsibilities

• Plan, lay out, install, maintain, and repair low- and medium-voltage electrical systems, including feeders, branch circuits, panelboards, switchgear, transformers, motors, motor controls, and lighting systems.
• Read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, and specifications to determine work sequence, material requirements, and installation methods.
• Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical faults using meters, testers, and diagnostic instruments; determine root cause and complete corrective repairs.
• Install and terminate conduit, cable tray, raceway, and wiring - including bending, cutting, threading, and mounting conduit to code.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections on electrical equipment and document results.
• Respond to service calls and after-hours emergencies, including outages and equipment failures, and participate in on-call rotation as assigned.
• Work in and around energized equipment following lockout/tagout, arc-flash, and personal protective equipment requirements.
• Coordinate work with other trades, contractors, and building occupants to minimize disruption to University operations.
• Estimate material and labor needs, requisition parts, and maintain accurate records of time, materials, and completed work.
• Operate University vehicles, aerial and bucket trucks, lifts, and other equipment as required.
• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe work area and comply with all applicable codes, safety regulations, and University policies.
• Provide guidance to apprentices and helpers, and perform related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements
The following physical requirements are essential functions of this position. Percentages indicate the approximate portion of a typical shift.

Working on ladders, scaffolds, bucket trucks, or at other elevated heights | As required
Vision sufficient to read and interpret blueprints and to identify and address issues | Continuous
Cognitive capability sufficient to troubleshoot, diagnose problems, and make repairs | Continuous

• Work is performed both indoors and outdoors across campus buildings, utility spaces, and grounds.
• May be required to work in tight or confined spaces, including manholes and crawl spaces.
• May be subject to extreme heat or cold and to inclement weather conditions.
• May be exposed to strong odors, dust, noise, and vibration.
• May be required to work at elevated heights from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, or bucket trucks.
• Requires use of personal protective equipment, including arc-rated clothing, as appropriate to the task.
• Overtime, shift work, weekend, holiday, and emergency call-in coverage may be required.

Tools/Equipment

• Employees in this position use a variety of hand tools, silica power tools, and conduit benders, and work from ladders, scaffolds, and bucket trucks, as well as in confined spaces including manholes.
• The employee must provide their own hand tools, including pliers, screwdrivers, wire cutters, allen wrenches, channel locks, tape measures, rules, and similar items. The University provides power tools, specialty tools, test instruments, vehicles, and all required personal protective equipment.
