What is electrical system integration?

Electrical system integration involves designing, connecting, and coordinating various electrical components and subsystems to function as a unified system. In the context of electrical system integration jobs, professionals often work with control systems, power distribution, and automation tools to ensure reliable and efficient operation of electrical infrastructure.

What is the difference between Electrical System Integration vs Electrical Design Engineer?

AspectElectrical System IntegrationElectrical Design Engineer
CertificationsPE license, relevant electrical certificationsPE license, electrical engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentField installation, system testing, commissioningDesign offices, CAD work, project planning
Primary FocusAssembling, testing, and commissioning electrical systemsCreating electrical system designs and schematics
Industry UsageConstruction, manufacturing, energy projectsProduct development, infrastructure projects

Electrical System Integration involves implementing and testing electrical systems in real-world environments, ensuring they function correctly. In contrast, Electrical Design Engineers focus on designing electrical systems and creating detailed plans. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials but differ in their daily tasks and work settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical system integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical System Integration Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, system architecture, and experience with power distribution and control systems, typically backed by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD tools, simulation software (like MATLAB/Simulink), and industry standards such as IEC or IEEE, along with certifications like Professional Engineer (PE), is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and resolve complex integration issues. These capabilities ensure that electrical systems are safely and efficiently integrated, meeting both technical requirements and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in electrical system integration roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Electrical System Integration often encounter challenges such as coordinating cross-functional teams, managing system compatibility issues, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Effective communication and strong project management skills are essential, as these roles frequently require collaboration with mechanical, software, and manufacturing engineers. Staying current with evolving technologies and regulatory requirements also helps address integration hurdles. Proactively participating in design reviews and thorough testing can further minimize integration risks and improve system reliability.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

  • Define electrical validation methodologies for PCB and different subsystems by working with system integration EE team and technology teams
  • Define and track detailed test plans for the different modules and top level systems. Validation coverage includes SoC, low speed signal interface (I2C, I2S, PDM...etc), I/O signals, high speed differential MIPI C-PHY/D-PHY, PCIe, USB SS, and UFS), electrical performance of subsystems such Display, Camera/Vision systems, Power/PMIC, Analog/Mixed-Signal, or Silicon IC FAE (e.g., TI, Renesas, Maxim, Qualcomm)
  • Drive and execute validation to meet key deadlines and priority goals
  • Own execution, interpretation, and reporting of electrical validation work status and results
  • Clearly document test results. Keep track of bugs encountered and fixed
  • Design, expand EE test automation and processes
  • Support system bring up and debug activities
  • Clearly communicate test plans and results

Minimum Qualifications

  • 3+ years of Electrical System Verification for consumer electronics - experience with mobile technology (smartphone, watches, AR/VR) is a plus
  • Experience with definition of validation test plans and developing detailed electrical validation SOPs
  • Experience executing electrical validation on the bench. Familiarity with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMM, e-load, power supply, power analyzer, spectrum analyzer, signal generator, protocol analyzer and temp chamber
  • Understanding of board schematics and board layout, finding proper probe locations and identify potential points of failure in the DUT
  • Board and system level validation and debugging experience
  • Working knowledge of Python, and LabVIEW for data processing and automation
