As of Jul 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for electrical reliability engineer in California is $109,636.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $81,900.00 and $130,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Electrical Reliability Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Reliability Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, failure analysis, and reliability-centered maintenance, often supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with reliability analysis tools like FMEA, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), reliability modeling software, and certification such as Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) is valuable. Excellent problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams help you stand out. These skills ensure the effective identification and resolution of electrical system issues, maximizing equipment uptime and maintaining safety and operational efficiency.

What are some typical challenges faced by Electrical Reliability Engineers in their day-to-day work?

Electrical Reliability Engineers often face challenges such as diagnosing intermittent electrical failures, implementing proactive maintenance strategies to minimize unplanned downtime, and balancing immediate repair needs with long-term reliability improvements. They may also need to collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to gather data, validate root cause findings, and ensure solutions are sustainable. Adapting to rapidly changing plant conditions and keeping up with new technologies are common aspects of the role. By approaching challenges methodically and communicating clearly with cross-functional teams, Electrical Reliability Engineers play a critical role in driving continuous improvement in equipment performance.

What does an Electrical Reliability Engineer do?

An Electrical Reliability Engineer ensures the reliability and performance of electrical systems in industrial or manufacturing settings. They analyze failure data, implement predictive maintenance strategies, and develop reliability improvement plans. Their role includes conducting root cause analysis, optimizing electrical assets, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. By proactively identifying risks and improving system efficiency, they help prevent unplanned downtime and maintain operational safety.

Job description

Who We Are

Nuro believes self-driving vehicles are the most immediate and profound opportunity for AI to drive positive change in the physical world. Safer streets, more time for what matters, and easier access to the world around us, that's why we're building a universal autonomy platform: self-driving for all roads and all rides.
Founded in 2016, Nuro is a physical AI company developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology for a wide range of vehicles, use cases, and markets. Powered by the Nuro Driver™, our universal autonomy platform enables the global mobility ecosystem to deploy autonomy at scale, from robotaxis and logistics fleets to personal vehicles.
With years of real-world deployment experience and a flexible, partner-led business model, Nuro is working toward a future where millions of autonomous vehicles powered by our technology help make everyday life safer, easier, and more connected.
Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Uber, NVIDIA, Google, Softbank, Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, and other leading investors.

About the Team

The Reliability team ensures that Nuro's autonomous vehicle hardware performs safely and robustly across real-world operating conditions. We work across mechanical, electrical, and system-level domains to develop and execute reliability strategies for sensors, compute platforms, harnessing, enclosures, and vehicle-integrated hardware.

Our team partners closely with design engineering, integration, test operations, manufacturing, and program teams to identify risks early, validate design durability, investigate failures, and improve product reliability throughout the development lifecycle. We combine hands-on test execution with data-driven analysis to help bring highly reliable autonomous vehicle systems to the road.

About the Role

  • On-site role at Nuro HQ in Mountain View, CA, and at our San Jose vehicle modification facility.
  • Opportunity to work alongside the AV Hardware Engineering team and cross-functional departments.
  • Support reliability test planning, setup, execution, and documentation for AV hardware systems, including sensors, compute hardware, and vehicle-integrated components.
  • Assist with CAD design of sensor integration components, test fixtures, fit-check parts, and related hardware using NX and Teamcenter.
  • Support prototype development and fabrication of structural and appearance components, testing jigs, fixtures, and fit-check parts using 3D printers and in-house fabrication tools.
  • Build, modify, and maintain hands-on test setups, prototype assemblies, and validation hardware used for development and reliability testing.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze test data to support issue investigation, design improvements, and validation decisions.
  • Support failure investigations by documenting test conditions, hardware observations, and failure results, and assist with structured root-cause analysis.
  • Contribute to a self-directed research or design project aimed at advancing hardware reliability, testing methods, or validation workflows.
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical, systems, and operations teams to troubleshoot issues and improve hardware robustness.

About You

  • Currently pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.
  • DFMEA, failure analysis, validation/testing exposure.
  • Demonstrated hands-on proficiency in the design, assembly, debugging, and testing of electrical or electromechanical systems through prior internships, research, or projects.
  • Familiarity with lab and prototyping environments, including the development of test setups, fixtures, and the use of electrical fabrication tools.
  • Competency with bench-level measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and DAQs.
  • Fundamental knowledge of electrical hardware integration, encompassing power distribution, signal integrity, connectors, and cable harnessing.
  • Understanding of reliability principles, including environmental stressors, component derating, and common failure modes in complex hardware.
  • Exposure to validation and reliability testing, such as thermal cycling, vibration, shock, and ingress protection (IP) verification.
  • Ability to document test methodologies, results, and technical observations in a clear, structured, and actionable manner.
  • Experience leveraging Python, MATLAB, or JMP for data analysis, automation, or test scripting.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities with strong communication skills and a high degree of technical ownership.

Bonus Points

  • Prior internship or co-op experience in electrical, reliability, validation, or hardware engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with reliability testing, environmental validation, or the development of hardware test platforms.
  • Familiarity with core hardware reliability concepts, including failure analysis, root-cause investigation, accelerated life testing (ALT), and test-to-failure methodologies.
  • Knowledge of automotive electrical validation for sensors, ECUs, harnesses, and high-reliability connectors.
  • Exposure to industry standards such as LV 124, ISO 16750, or JEDEC reliability and validation protocols.
  • Proven ability to perform structured root-cause analysis and debug complex electrical or system-level hardware failures.
  • Familiarity with reliability modeling and statistical analysis tools, such as DOE, Weibull analysis, and life data analysis.
  • Experience evaluating test data to identify degradation trends, intermittent faults, or early-stage hardware reliability risks.
  • Practical skill in building custom test setups, including fixtures, breakout hardware, and cable harnesses.
  • Currently pursuing a Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering field.

For this position, the reasonably expected base $8,000/month. Your actual base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills.
