Job Description

At CDM Smith, you will contribute to challenging design and construction projects across a range of electrical engineering disciplines, including complex power system design and analysis, field investigations, and construction-phase services. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, apply advanced tools and technologies, and work on projects aligned with your technical interests and career goals.

As an Electrical Design Engineer 5, you will have the opportunity to:

  • With general direction, develop basic to highly complex designs for electrical master plans, power systems, protection and generation models, facility power systems, sustainability and renewable energy systems, and similar electrical systems.
  • Perform power system studies and electrical calculations, including lighting simulations and layouts, communications, fire alarm, security, and related facility system analyses.
  • Conduct site reviews and technical studies, as needed, to confirm existing conditions and ensure designs align with site-specific requirements. Revise design criteria and requirements based on findings.
  • Contribute to the firm’s Technical Knowledge Management (TKM) program by developing white papers, technical design documentation, and case studies related to new, specialized, or complex designs and studies.
  • Prepare and submit technical papers and designs for publication in industry journals.
  • Collaborate with sales staff to develop proposals in response to requests from current and prospective clients. Review draft proposals for alignment with firm standards, industry best practices, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Meet with current and prospective clients to understand their present and future design needs and help develop appropriate technical solutions.
  • Attend conferences, symposia, and other industry events to strengthen technical expertise and increase the visibility of the firm’s services in collaboration with applicable sales staff.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior staff to support their professional growth within the discipline and firm.
  • Review and, as assigned, supervise the project work of junior engineers.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Equivalent directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required depending on project needs, workload, and business demands.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with electrical power systems for water, wastewater, industrial, federal, and transit facilities.
  • Familiarity with industry and federal codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA, NESC, IEEE, and UFC.
  • Proficiency in power system planning.
  • Experience with distributed generation, alternative energy, and microgrid systems.
  • Experience designing, troubleshooting, and problem-solving for medium-voltage distribution systems, including substations, switchgear, and standby generation systems.
  • Proficiency with SKM Power*Tools and ETAP.
  • Experience with additional electrical system analysis software such as EasyPower, EDSA/Paladin, CYME, or Milsoft.
  • Published work in IEEE Journals, IEEE Transactions, or other technical journals is a plus.

Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering design principles.
  • Advanced knowledge of CADD, 3D, and 4D design software and practices.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word and Excel.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ability to lead technical work, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and mentor junior staff.
