What is electrical mining?

Electrical mining refers to the use of electrical systems and equipment in the extraction and processing of minerals from the earth. This field involves maintaining, installing, and troubleshooting electrical machinery such as conveyors, drilling machines, and lighting systems in mining operations. Electrical mining professionals ensure that these systems run safely and efficiently to support production goals and minimize downtime. They must follow strict safety standards due to the hazardous nature of mining environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical mining engineer?

To excel as an Electrical Mining Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, mining operations, and safety protocols, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and professional certification. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, PLC programming, SCADA systems, and compliance with MSHA regulations is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you stand out in this field. These competencies are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable electrical systems in challenging mining environments.

What are some common challenges electrical professionals face when working in the mining industry?

Electrical professionals in the mining industry often encounter challenges such as maintaining and troubleshooting equipment in harsh and remote environments, adhering to strict safety standards, and working with high-voltage systems. The work frequently involves collaborating with mechanical and operations teams to ensure seamless production while minimizing downtime. Job description

Maintenance Manager

Starting pay from $100,000 Annual

Who We Are:

Thompson Pipe Group is a privately held family business of engineers, contractors, and manufacturers based in Rialto, California. From our humble beginnings, we built a family of products to the needs of all kinds of infrastructure. Each generation of products is better than the previous.

Thompson Pipe Group is now the largest and most diverse drainage, sanitary, pressure and trench-less pipe provider, with manufacturing locations across the country and serving not just the US but all North America. Please visit our website at www.thompsonpipegroup.com
JOB FUNCTION:

Schedule and direct a crew of Maintenance Mechanics/Technicians involved in one or more maintenance and repair specialties; train and provide work direction and guidance while performing work in one or more of the skilled trades. Promote and maintain a safe work environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plant Reliability & Uptime
    • Own uptime for batch plant systems including batching computer/controls (e.g., Jonel or comparable batching control systems), aggregate bins, conveyors, weigh systems, cement/fly ash silos, and water metering systems
    • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic failures across the plant
    • Lead root-cause analysis on recurring failures rather than repeat-fixing symptoms
    • Maintain calibration schedules for scales, moisture probes, and batching accuracy systems
  • Preventive Maintenance Program

    • Build and manage a PM schedule for all critical assets (batch plant, mixer trucks, loaders, conveyors, dust collection, air compressors)
    • Track PM compliance and downtime metrics through the CMMS
    • Maintain spare parts inventory for high-failure-risk components to minimize downtime during breakdowns
  • Rolling Stock Shop Oversight

    • Own the day-to-day operation of the rolling stock shop: mixer truck fleet, loaders, forklifts, and other mobile/heavy equipment
    • Manage PM scheduling, DOT inspection compliance, and DVIR follow-up for mixer trucks and other licensed equipment
    • Oversee diesel engine, hydraulic, chassis, and drum/mixer system repairs, either performed in-house or coordinated with outside vendors
    • Track fleet uptime and repair turnaround time; manage shop workflow to keep trucks in rotation for dispatch
    • Manage rolling stock parts inventory and vendor relationships (tires, hydraulics, drivetrain components)
    • Supervise rolling stock technicians alongside plant maintenance staff, balancing labor across both functions based on priority
  • Team Leadership

    • Directly supervise plant mechanics and electricians; set daily priorities and hold the team accountable to safety and quality standards
    • Train technicians on batching system troubleshooting, electrical lockout/tagout, and confined space procedures specific to silo and bin work
    • Conduct performance reviews and support hiring/onboarding of maintenance staff
  • Safety & Compliance

    • Enforce lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fall protection, and electrical safety procedures
    • Maintain compliance with OSHA, MSHA (where applicable), and company EHS standards
    • Lead incident investigations for equipment-related near misses and injuries
  • Capital & Project Support

    • Scope and manage minor capital repairs/upgrades (conveyor replacement, silo work, control system upgrades)
    • Coordinate with outside contractors and OEM service (batching control vendors, electrical contractors) on major repairs or installs
    • Support budget planning for maintenance capital and operating spend
  • Cross-Functional Coordination

    • Work with Plant Manager and Dispatch to minimize maintenance-driven downtime during peak pour schedules
    • Coordinate with QC on batching accuracy issues tied to mechanical/electrical faults
    • Report plant condition, downtime trends, and capital needs to regional/national leadership
  • Required Qualifications

    • 5+ years of maintenance leadership experience in a ready mix, aggregate, cement, or heavy industrial manufacturing environment
    • Strong working knowledge of batch plant systems: aggregate handling, weigh batching, cement/water metering, and batching control software
    • Direct experience managing a rolling stock or heavy equipment repair shop, including mixer truck fleets (diesel engine, hydraulics, chassis, and drum systems)
    • Electrical troubleshooting ability (motor controls, VFDs, PLCs a plus) and mechanical troubleshooting (conveyors, gearboxes, pneumatics, hydraulics)
    • Demonstrated ability to lead a hands-on trades team, not just manage from a desk
    • Working knowledge of OSHA and DOT compliance requirements; MSHA experience a plus if plant includes aggregate mining operations
    • Experience with CMMS platforms for PM scheduling and downtime tracking across both fixed plant and mobile fleet assets
    • Familiarity with California-specific fleet/DOT and CARB emissions compliance requirements
  • Preferred Qualifications

    • Direct experience with Jonel, Command Alkon, or comparable batch control systems
    • Journeyman electrician license or equivalent industrial electrical certification
    • Experience managing maintenance budgets and capital project scoping
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus given plant floor demographics

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision and hearing.
