Job description
The Electrical Lineworker Instructor is responsible for planning, developing, and teaching power distribution and generation in the classroom and through hands-on field training. This includes ensuring instruction aligns with industry standards, safety regulations, college policies and procedures, and the operational needs of the program.

- Deliver instruction in overhead and underground electrical distribution systems, including pole climbing, line construction, transformer installation, and system troubleshooting.
- Facilitate hands-on training in laboratory and field environments, ensuring students develop practical competencies using hand tools, power tools, bucket trucks, and digger derricks.
- Teach, model, and enforce industry safety standards, including OSHA regulations, electrical hazard awareness, fall protection, and emergency response procedures (e.g., pole-top rescue and bucket rescue).
- Prepare students to obtain industry-recognized credentials such as OSHA 10, First Aid/CPR, Work Zone Flagger Certification, trenching and excavation safety, and a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Evaluate student performance through written assessments, practical skill demonstrations, physical performance evaluations, and participation in training activities.
- Collaborate with local employers for needs assessments.
- Plan and deliver comprehensive training in line construction, maintenance, operations, and de-energized line work.
- Ensure that each class session contains essential curricular components, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and maintains relevance and consistency with industry best practices.
- Evaluate student progress and provide appropriate, timely feedback.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, academic progress, certifications, and compliance documentation in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
- Incorporate appropriate instructional technology to enhance student learning.
- Maintain instructional areas and ensure proper operation of classroom and laboratory equipment, reporting any malfunctions or necessary preventive and routine maintenance promptly.
- Ensure the safety of instructors and students by working with the FTCC OSHA Services Coordinator to ensure compliance with all OSHA and DOT requirements.
- Ensure regular safety inspections for all aspects of the class are completed as required.
- Ensure all instructors and students adhere to the safety policies and procedures in place.
- Maintain cleanliness of instructional areas and laboratories.
- Maintain training equipment, tools, and facilities to ensure a safe, functional, and industry-relevant learning environment.
- Provide real-world demonstrations of lineworker tasks, including pole climbing, equipment use, and safety procedures.
- Assist with the selection of textbooks, instructional materials, equipment, and supplies, and recommend these resources to the Department Chair and/or Dean of Corporate and Industry Training.
- Promote safety by teaching and modeling OSHA regulations, National Electrical Safety Code standards, and other industry guidelines.
- Support student recruitment, retention, and job placement efforts by providing mentorship, career guidance, and industry insight.
- Develop and distribute course syllabi according to established templates, providing students with appropriate information concerning course expectations and evaluation criteria.
- Remain current on guidelines and procedures for state and national certification requirements.
- Create a student-centered environment for on-campus and off-campus students.
- Work toward operational excellence through continuous improvement of processes and engagement with advisory committees.
- Implement innovative strategies to meet student needs and improve processes.
- Collaborate with program leadership, workforce partners, and industry stakeholders to ensure curriculum alignment with current workforce needs and standards.
- Interact with co-workers and perform tasks with the highest level of integrity.
- Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and the learning community.
- Promote and support FTCC's mission, vision, and values, and support coworkers in the most positive manner.
- Lifting and carrying materials and equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Climbing utility poles and towers and working at heights exceeding 50 to 100 feet.
- Performing strenuous physical activities such as pulling, climbing, lifting, and prolonged standing or walking.
- Maintaining balance and coordination in elevated, uneven, or confined workspaces.
- Demonstrating manual dexterity and precision when handling tools and electrical components.
- Working outdoors in varying environmental conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Safely operating and instructing students in the use of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment (e.g., bucket trucks, digger derricks).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 5-10 years of experience as an electrical lineworker.
- Knowledge of Rural Utilities Service (RUS) specifications and proficiency in linework operations.
- Valid Class A CDL with a clean record.
- Current DOT physical and ability to meet safety-sensitive job requirements.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Excellent oral, auditory, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with diverse populations.
- Associate degree in Electrical Line Construction, Electrical Systems Technology, or a related field from an accredited college or university, or equivalent.
- Industry certifications including OSHA 30-Hour Construction, CPR/AED/First Aid, Work Zone Flagger Certification, and NCCER Instructor Certification Training Program (ICTP).
- Experience teaching or training electrical lineworkers in a professional or educational setting.
- Experience supervising electrical lineworkers.
- Ten years of documented fieldwork as a journeyman lineworker or higher, including hands-on experience in line construction, maintenance, and repairs.
- 10-20 years of supervisory experience as a foreman or higher.
- Experience in underground power.
- Experience in power generation, including water turbines, solar, and wind power.
