DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe Electrical Inspector coordinates the enforcement and application of various codes, ordinances and technical specifications for electrical systems to ensure conformance with electrical plans and specifications. Performs investigations of unpermitted electrical work and issues citations or seeks supervisory assistance with regard to unlicensed contractors or individuals. Performs electrical inspections, identifies problem areas with electrical systems, serves correction notices and recommends solutions based on applicable electrical codes and ordinances. Meets with the general public, contractors, technical professionals and businesses to respond to inquiries and technical problems related to electrical systems. Performs record keeping activities to maintain filing systems, reports and documentation. Researches and evaluates electrical plans, specifications and drawings. Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items, such as typewriters or records boxes (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces on a routine basis.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School Diploma or G.E.D. and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection to be performed.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSTwo (2) years of journey level or skilled experience related to the area of inspection to be performed are required.
Certificate/License: Code Enforcement: The following certificates/licenses are preferred to be obtained within 11 months of employment in the area of inspection to be performed:
Electrical - ICBO or IAEA Inspector's Certificate.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTSMay require a valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.
PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants:
  • Who possess an electrical journeyman level or higher electrical license.
  • With valid ICC, ICBO or IAEI Inspector's Certificate.
  • Who can obtain said certification and/or licensing within 11 months of employment.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
GENERAL INFORMATION

SALARY INFORMATIONFactors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
Pay Grade - 18
INCENTIVES/AWARDS
Retention: Eligible for award of up to $3000.00, upon completion of 24 months employment
Relocation: Eligible for incentive of up to $1000.00, upon submission of qualifying receipts
Certification: Eligible for annual incentives of up to $3900.00, upon acquisition of eligible certifications
Step Increase: Salary adjusted by 3.1% upon start of 3rd year of employment
Salary adjusted by 2.8% upon start of 5th year of employment
