Job description

Henneman Engineering is a multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm providing comprehensive engineering design and project support services for clients across higher education, healthcare, municipal, commercial, industrial, and institutional markets.

Our electrical engineering team supports projects involving power distribution, lighting, emergency power, grounding, electrical studies, construction documentation, field investigation, and construction administration. Engineers work closely with architects, owners, contractors, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, controls engineers, and other technical professionals to deliver practical, reliable, and high-quality engineering solutions.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Henneman Engineering is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Champaign, Illinois office. This role is ideal for an experienced electrical engineer who enjoys leading projects, solving complex design challenges, working directly with clients, mentoring younger engineers, and helping guide projects from initial concept through construction.

This is a client-facing consulting engineering role with responsibility for technical design, project coordination, quality control, construction support, and business development support. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing multiple projects, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and producing complete electrical design packages for a variety of facility types.

WHY THIS ROLE STANDS OUT
  • Lead meaningful electrical engineering projects across higher education, healthcare, municipal, commercial, and industrial facilities.
  • Work on a wide variety of projects instead of being limited to one building type, one facility, or one narrow design specialty.
  • Join a collaborative multidisciplinary engineering firm with in-house mechanical, structural, electrical, controls, instrumentation, and process engineering resources.
  • Take ownership of projects from planning and design through bidding, construction, and final closeout.
  • Build long-term client relationships while helping shape the direction and growth of the electrical engineering practice.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers while remaining technologically involved in design decisions.
  • Support local and regional clients with a strong focus on practical engineering, constructability, and responsive client service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead electrical engineering projects through planning, design, construction documentation, bidding, construction administration, and project closeout.
  • Serve as the primary electrical engineering point of contact for clients, architects, contractors, internal project managers, and other project stakeholders.
  • Design electrical systems for power distribution, lighting, lighting controls, emergency power, standby power, grounding, and related facility electrical systems.
  • Prepare and review electrical construction drawings, technical specifications, engineering calculations, reports, opinions of probable cost, and other project deliverables.
  • Develop and evaluate electrical distribution systems including service entrances, switchboards, panelboards, transformers, feeders, branch circuits, motor loads, and emergency power systems.
  • Perform or oversee short circuit, coordination, arc flash, voltage drop, load, and related electrical engineering studies.
  • Provide technical leadership, quality control, and design guidance for electrical engineering deliverables.
  • Mentor junior engineers, designers, and technical staff through project execution and professional development.
  • Coordinate electrical design requirements with mechanical, plumbing, structural, architectural, controls, and process disciplines.
  • Conduct site visits, field investigations, existing condition assessments, construction observations, punch lists, and commissioning support as required.
  • Support proposal development, scope definition, project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and client communication.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and industry best practices including NEC, NFPA, energy codes, and facility-specific requirements.
TECHNICAL AREAS OF FOCUS
  • Low- and medium-voltage power distribution
  • Electrical service and building power systems
  • Switchboards, switchgear, panelboards, transformers, and motor control equipment
  • Emergency and standby power systems
  • Generator systems, transfer switches, and UPS systems
  • Lighting and lighting control systems
  • Grounding and lightning protection systems
  • Arc flash, short circuit, and protective device coordination studies
  • Power system analysis and modeling
  • Electrical equipment evaluation and replacement planning
  • Construction documentation and electrical specifications
  • Construction administration and field engineering support
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible electrical engineering experience.
  • Experience designing electrical systems for commercial, institutional, municipal, healthcare, higher education, or industrial facilities.
  • Strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, NFPA standards, and applicable electrical design codes.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary design projects and coordinating directly with clients, architects, contractors, and internal engineering teams.
  • Ability to develop complete electrical design packages, including drawings, specifications, calculations, and construction-phase support documentation.
  • Strong communication, organization, technical writing, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, budgets, and client expectations.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to client sites as needed.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in consulting engineering or an A/E design environment.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience with SKM PowerTools, ETAP, EasyPower, or similar power system modeling software.
  • Experience with healthcare, higher education, municipal, commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities.
  • Experience performing or reviewing arc flash, short circuit, coordination, load flow, and voltage drop studies.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70E, NFPA 99, NFPA 101, and energy code requirements.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers, reviewing design work, and supporting professional development of technical staff.
  • Additional state engineering registrations or ability to obtain them.
  • Client-facing experience including proposals, interviews, presentations, project scope development, and business development support.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • Competitive salary based on experience, licensure, technical expertise, and project leadership capability.
  • Annual performance and bonus opportunities.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Company-paid life and disability insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer matching contribution.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development support.
  • Professional licensing and continuing education assistance.
  • Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.
  • Flexible work environment, as applicable to project and client needs.
  • Clear opportunities for career advancement, technical leadership, and practice growth.
  • Collaborative culture focused on teamwork, mentorship, practical engineering, and technical excellence.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND TRAVEL

This position is based out of the Champaign, Illinois office. The role includes office-based design work, client meetings, site visits, field investigations, construction observations, and project coordination. Travel is primarily local or regional, with overnight travel expected only as needed based on project requirements.
