Electrical Estimator Project Manager information

What does an electrical estimator project manager do?

An Electrical Estimator Project Manager is responsible for preparing cost estimates and managing electrical projects from start to finish. They analyze blueprints, specifications, and other documents to estimate the cost of labor, materials, and equipment. In addition to estimating, they oversee project schedules, coordinate with contractors and clients, and ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. This role requires a strong understanding of electrical systems, project management skills, and attention to detail.

How does an electrical estimator project manager balance estimation duties with project management responsibilities throughout a project's lifecycle?

An Electrical Estimator Project Manager often divides their time between preparing accurate project cost estimates during the pre-construction phase and overseeing project execution once work begins. Early in the project, the focus is on analyzing blueprints, coordinating with vendors for pricing, and developing detailed bid proposals. Once a project is awarded, the role shifts toward scheduling, resource allocation, and managing communications with clients, subcontractors, and field teams. Successfully balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt to shifting project priorities, ensuring both cost efficiency and project quality are maintained.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical estimator project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Estimator Project Manager, you need a strong background in electrical systems, cost estimation, and project management, typically supported by a relevant degree or trade certification. Proficiency with estimating software (such as Accubid or Bluebeam), project scheduling tools, and Microsoft Office Suite is commonly required. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure accurate bids, efficient project execution, and successful collaboration with clients and teams.

Job description

JUNIOR ELECTRICAL ESTIMATOR / ESTIMADOR ELÉCTRICO JUNIOR

Company: Division 16, LLC
Location: Caguas, Puerto Rico
Type: Full-time – On-site
Focus: ~95% Office / ~5% Occasional Field Work

Position Description

Division 16, LLC is seeking a Junior Electrical Estimator to join our Estimating and Preconstruction Department.

We are looking for a candidate with previous experience in the electrical construction industry or a closely related electrical field, with a working knowledge of electrical materials, equipment, systems, drawings, and construction processes, who is interested in developing a career in electrical estimating.

The ideal candidate may have experience in electrical estimating, electrical construction, electrical equipment or material sales, project coordination, procurement, field supervision, technical support, or other related electrical industry roles.

Previous direct estimating experience is preferred; however, candidates with a strong electrical background, analytical skills, and the ability to understand plans, materials, equipment, and project requirements will also be considered.

This position offers the opportunity to work directly with experienced estimators while progressively developing the skills necessary to prepare complete and competitive electrical estimates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and assist with electrical quantity takeoffs from construction drawings and specifications.
  • Review electrical plans, specifications, addenda, RFIs, and other bid documents.
  • Identify electrical materials, equipment, systems, and project scope requirements.
  • Assist in developing material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Request, organize, and follow up on vendor and supplier quotations.
  • Prepare material lists, estimating worksheets, data summaries, and internal reports.
  • Assist in identifying scope gaps, exclusions, clarifications, and potential cost impacts.
  • Support the preparation of electrical proposals and bid packages.
  • Maintain organized electronic estimating files and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with senior estimators, project managers, suppliers, subcontractors, and other team members.
  • Participate in bid reviews and estimate reconciliation.
  • Learn and develop proficiency with company estimating software, databases, and internal procedures.
  • Assist in evaluating different electrical systems and construction methods during the estimating process.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1–3 years of relevant experience in the electrical industry, including one or more of the following:
  • Electrical estimating or preconstruction
  • Electrical construction
  • Electrical equipment or material sales
  • Electrical project coordination
  • Procurement or purchasing of electrical materials
  • Field supervision
  • Electrical technical support
  • Preparation of quotations or bids
  • Other closely related electrical construction or industry experience
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical construction drawings.
  • General understanding of electrical materials, equipment, and construction systems.
  • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and structure technical information clearly.
  • Effective communication skills in English and Spanish, written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and manage multiple bid-related tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience performing electrical quantity takeoffs or construction estimates.
  • Technical degree, Associate Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or coursework in:
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Construction Management
  • Engineering
  • or another related technical field.
  • Experience with electrical estimating or digital takeoff software.
  • Familiarity with commercial, industrial, institutional, or infrastructure electrical construction.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Previous field experience in electrical construction.
  • Experience obtaining or reviewing quotations from electrical suppliers or manufacturers.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is early in their estimating career or transitioning into estimating from another electrical industry position, but who already understands the fundamentals of electrical construction, materials, equipment, or project documentation.

The candidate does not need to be a senior estimator or independently manage major bids from day one. However, the individual should have enough electrical industry knowledge to contribute to takeoffs, pricing, vendor coordination, scope review, and bid preparation while continuing to develop under experienced estimators.

This is not intended as a zero-experience trainee position. Candidates should have previous relevant experience within the electrical construction or electrical industry environment.
