Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing of electrical systems in offices, labs, or manufacturingInstallation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems on-site or in facilities
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, technology companiesConstruction, maintenance companies, industrial facilities

Electrical Engineering involves designing and developing electrical systems, requiring a bachelor's degree, while Electrical Technicians focus on installing and maintaining these systems, typically with technical certifications. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but differ in responsibilities, education, and work settings.

What are some common challenges electrical engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Electrical engineers often collaborate with professionals from mechanical, civil, and software engineering backgrounds on large projects. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as each field may use different technical terminology and have unique priorities. Balancing system integration, meeting project deadlines, and managing overlapping responsibilities can also be complex. Successful electrical engineers develop strong teamwork and problem-solving skills to navigate these challenges and deliver cohesive solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in circuit design, electronics, and mathematics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or PSpice, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license are important technical qualifications. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help electrical engineers excel in collaborative and innovative environments. These competencies ensure effective project execution, safety, and the development of reliable electrical systems.

Job description

Simbex is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design and develop embedded electronics for next-generation IoT wearable devices. In this role, you will contribute throughout the hardware development lifecycle, from concept and schematic design through PCB development, board bring-up, testing, and production support. You'll work closely with embedded firmware engineers to create innovative, low-power wearable systems used in demanding real-world environments.

Responsibilities
Hardware Design & Development

  • Design embedded electronic systems from concept through production
  • Select microcontrollers, sensors, RF components, power management devices, and supporting circuitry
  • Develop schematics and collaborate on PCB layout to ensure manufacturability and performance
  • Participate in design reviews and support design-for-manufacture activities

Board Bring-Up & Debug

  • Perform board bring-up, including power validation, peripheral verification, and functional testing
  • Troubleshoot hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, and other laboratory equipment
  • Diagnose hardware and firmware integration issues
  • Characterize and optimize power consumption for battery-operated devices

Testing & Validation

  • Develop hardware validation plans and execute electrical testing
  • Create test fixtures and support manufacturing test development
  • Document design decisions, test results, and engineering changes
  • Support product verification and regulatory testing efforts

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 3-6 years of experience designing embedded electronic systems
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB development
  • Experience selecting microcontrollers, sensors, power management ICs, and embedded components
  • Familiarity with embedded interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, USB, and GPIO
  • Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other electronic test equipment
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with battery-powered or wearable devices
  • Familiarity with Nordic nRF52/nRF53, STM32, or similar embedded platforms
  • BLE or RF hardware design experience
  • Experience supporting manufacturing and production test
