What does an electrical engineer do?

Electrical engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing of electrical equipment such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, and power generation equipment. They also work on the electrical systems of vehicles and aircraft, as well as electronic devices like smartphones and computers. Their work often involves solving complex problems, ensuring safety standards, and improving the efficiency and reliability of electrical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer, you need a solid background in circuit design, electronics, and mathematics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or PSpice, and often a Professional Engineer (PE) license are important technical qualifications. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help electrical engineers excel in collaborative and innovative environments. These competencies ensure effective project execution, safety, and the development of reliable electrical systems.

What are some common challenges electrical engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Electrical engineers often collaborate with professionals from mechanical, civil, and software engineering backgrounds on large projects. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as each field may use different technical terminology and have unique priorities. Balancing system integration, meeting project deadlines, and managing overlapping responsibilities can also be complex. Successful electrical engineers develop strong teamwork and problem-solving skills to navigate these challenges and deliver cohesive solutions.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineering vs Electrical Technician?

AspectElectrical EngineeringElectrical Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Electrical EngineeringAssociate degree or technical certification
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and testing of electrical systems in offices, labs, or manufacturingInstallation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems on-site or in facilities
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, technology companiesConstruction, maintenance companies, industrial facilities

Electrical Engineering involves designing and developing electrical systems, requiring a bachelor's degree, while Electrical Technicians focus on installing and maintaining these systems, typically with technical certifications. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but differ in responsibilities, education, and work settings.

What careers can you do with electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering graduates can pursue careers as electrical engineers, electronics engineers, control systems engineers, power systems engineers, and telecommunications engineers. These roles involve designing, developing, testing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment across industries such as energy, manufacturing, telecommunications, and technology. Professional certifications and proficiency with tools like CAD software and circuit analysis are often required.

What type of work do electrical engineers do?

Electrical engineers design, develop, and test electrical systems and components used in a variety of industries such as power generation, electronics, telecommunications, and automation. They work on projects involving circuit design, control systems, and power distribution, often using tools like CAD software and adhering to safety standards. Their work may involve both research and practical implementation in laboratory or field environments.

  • Review electrical calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction documents to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary project teams to meet project milestones and budget objectives.
  • Perform site surveys, field investigations, and existing equipment assessments.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to field questions and resolving technical issues.
  • Monitor project scope, engineering budgets, and construction budgets while proactively communicating potential changes.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining company engineering, drafting, and design standards.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, architects, and other project stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Ability to lead multiple complex projects simultaneously while managing schedules and budgets.
  • Experience directing and mentoring engineering and design staff.
  • Strong communication, leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform site investigations and coordinate engineering support during construction.
  • Candidates must currently reside in the Cleveland metropolitan area or be willing to relocate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multidisciplinary engineering project coordination.
  • Proficiency with industry-standard electrical design software and BIM/Revit platforms.
  • Experience working directly with architects, contractors, and building owners on commercial construction projects.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary of $120,000-$130,000, based on experience
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid vacation, holidays, and personal time
  • Retirement savings plan with company contribution
  • Professional development, continuing education, and licensing support
