Electrical Engineer


Role Description: Huitt-Zollars has an exciting full-time opportunity for a Registered Professional Electrical Engineer with at least five years of experience and to join our team. This role works with multi-disciplinary design teams in the completion of studies, development of plans and specifications for a broad range of projects. The incumbent performs design of site and facilities electrical power, communications, and interior/exterior lighting systems. Candidates must pass HZ security clearance review (criminal background check and Motor Vehicle Record check) and Federal Government base access requirements.

Reports to: Vice President/Managing Principal

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE)


Duties:

  • Prepare design of electrical and interior/exterior lighting systems, design documents, plans and specifications.
  • Guide others in the preparation of programming documents, schematic design, and design development and construction documents.
  • Support multiple electrical engineering designs of new construction and renovation projects.
  • Prepare designs and handle design review and quality control.
  • Prepare electrical construction specifications, budgets, schedules and work plans for projects.
  • Research building codes and standards to determine essential design requirements of the projects.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other HZ staff, utility representatives, contractors, and consultants and clients.
  • Perform electrical system planning including electric distribution layouts, specifications of wiring systems, and analysis of loads.
  • Calculate lighting illumination levels and designs lighting layouts for both interior and exterior lighting projects. 
  • Perform electrical studies including voltage drop/dip, short circuit and overcurrent coordination studies.
  • Prepare various technical reports for engineering studies.
  • Coordinate with other HZ disciplines, utility companies, consulting engineers, architects, and contractors to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in project design.
  • Update Project Managers on work progress and address potential project problems.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, trainings to stay current on trade principles, practices and new developments.
  • Review project construction submittals and shop drawings.
  • Visit construction sites, perform project construction observations and prepare punch lists (Some travel involved).

  • Productively collaborates with PMs and encourages teams to achieve success and camaraderie amongst each other. 
  • Understands and follows HZ QMS and Quality initiatives. Assists PM on ensuring that quality control measures are being adhered to on projects and daily operations.  
  • Understands duties and responsibilities, possesses necessary job knowledge and technical skills, maintains job knowledge current.
  • Assist with appropriate administrative and project support tasks supporting the needs of the PM on assigned project tasks. 
  • Contributes to successful delivery and performance of projects.
  • Complete assignments on-time, within budget, and with highest level of quality. 
  • Routinely proposes and produces more effective ways to accomplish tasks.
  • Assists PM as needed on work planning. Prepares and follows comprehensive Project Framework Instructions and proper work planning for a project. Assists PM on ensuring proper staff is assigned and utilized on their projects.
  • Assists PMs as needed on reviewing project reports and performance metrics to track project progress and budget. Assists PM in leading successful projects (profit, on-schedule, quality, satisfied client).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE).
  • Registered Professional Engineer.
  • NOTE: "Exam Ready EIT will be considered".
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Revit BIM.
  • Proficiency with Electrical analysis software such as SKM Powertools, Easypower (or eqiv)., and lighting analysis with AGi32 or equivalent.
  • Experience performing short circuit, voltage drop, protective device coordination.
  • Intermediate skills with spreadsheet software.
  • Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 101.
  • Familiarity with industry energy standards (ASHRAE 90.1, IECC).
  • Ability to interact with clients and multi-discipline team members.
  • Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience using the Unified Facilities Criteria and designing projects on federal installations preferred.
  • LEED AP, CEM credentials is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently in a team environment and to manage multiple projects with limited supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, communicating engineering information clearly and concisely.
  • Must pass HZ security clearance review and pass Federal Government base access requirements.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
