What does an electrical engineer do?

An Electrical Engineer designs, develops, tests, and supervises the manufacturing of electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, and power generation equipment. They work in a variety of industries, including energy, manufacturing, telecommunications, and electronics. Their role often involves problem-solving, project management, and ensuring that systems comply with safety and quality standards. Electrical Engineers also collaborate with other engineers and professionals to bring projects from concept to completion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of circuit design, electronics, mathematics, and physics, usually backed by a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or PSpice, and knowledge of relevant industry standards or certifications (such as a Professional Engineer license) are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills set outstanding engineers apart. These competencies are critical for designing safe, efficient electrical systems and collaborating effectively on complex engineering projects.

What are some common challenges electrical engineers face when working on multidisciplinary project teams?

Job description

U.S. Citizenship or lawful permanent resident (Green Card) status is required for this position.

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to support design verification testing (DVT) and day-to-day lab operations for a robotics hardware program. This is a hands-on role with a wide variety of responsibilities, including executing DVT test plans, supporting board bring-up through probing, measurement, and PCBA debugging, performing surface mount rework, building cables, tracking shipments, maintaining lab equipment, and documenting test reports and procedures. The work varies from day to day, combining engineering tasks with whatever support the team needs to keep projects moving forward.

The ideal candidate is comfortable using oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers, and other standard lab equipment, and has strong surface mount soldering skills, including work with 0402 components and fine-pitch packages. They should be able to work independently, take ownership of assigned tasks, and adapt quickly to changing priorities while remaining collaborative and easy to work with. A positive attitude and strong team fit are just as important as technical ability.

Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) along with a few years of hands-on lab or test engineering experience. Experience with mixed-signal debugging is a plus. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is motivated, adaptable, eager to learn, and excited to contribute across a range of technical and operational responsibilities.
