What kinds of projects and responsibilities can an Electrical Engineer In Training expect in their first year?

As an Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT), you will typically support senior engineers on a variety of projects, such as designing electrical systems for buildings, assisting with circuit analysis, or performing site inspections. Your daily tasks may include drafting plans, running calculations, creating reports, and collaborating with both engineering colleagues and professionals from other disciplines, like architects and contractors. EITs are encouraged to ask questions, seek mentorship, and gradually take on more complex tasks as their knowledge grows. This role offers a hands-on learning environment and is designed to help you build the experience needed to work towards your Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer In Training, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer In Training, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and eligibility for EIT or FE certification. Familiarity with CAD software, circuit simulation tools, and industry standards is common, along with exposure to electrical safety codes. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in collaborative projects and adapt to dynamic work environments. These skills are crucial for effectively contributing to engineering teams, ensuring project quality, and preparing for professional licensure.

What is an Electrical Engineer In Training?

An Electrical Engineer In Training (EIT) is a recent graduate or early-career professional who has completed an accredited engineering degree and passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. EITs work under the supervision of licensed engineers, gaining hands-on experience before becoming eligible to take the Professional Engineer (PE) exam. The EIT designation indicates a commitment to the engineering profession and is a key step toward full licensure as a Professional Engineer. Typical responsibilities include assisting with designing electrical systems, conducting tests, and preparing technical reports.

Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Columbus, OH
Reporting To: William (Bill) Thomas
Description
Sound like your next move?
  • You're a Senior Electrical Engineer in Columbus who's built real expertise - and you're ready to put it to work on projects that set the standard
  • You're energized by complex, high-profile environments: high-rise office towers, major airports, historic preservation projects - work where the technical challenges are real and the design bar is uncompromising
  • You own the full technical scope: construction documents, load calculations, short circuit and coordination studies, cost estimates - and you do it with the kind of precision that keeps ambitious projects on track
  • You lead with confidence, coordinate across disciplines without friction, and bring a level of reliability that makes every team around you better
  • You're not chasing a lateral move - you want a firm where your career has room to accelerate

HEAPY is that firm.
We're a mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering firm with deep roots in the AEC industry and a reputation for technically excellent work across some of the most complex and consequential project types in the region. Our Corporate Practice spans high-rise office buildings, major airports, and historically significant structures - each one demanding a different kind of expertise, and each one raising the ceiling on what great electrical engineering looks like.
Our Corporate Practice is growing, and we're building the team that will define what it looks like for the next decade. Here, senior engineers don't just execute - they influence, they mentor, and they help clients work through challenges they haven't fully named yet. If you want to grow into one of the best engineers in your market, inside a firm that will genuinely invest in that growth, HEAPY is where that happens.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Electrical Engineer independently performs a variety of assignments involving the application of standard electrical design engineering techniques for a small project or selected segments of a larger project. This person must be capable of exercising independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to make minor design adaptations and modifications. This position requires the colleague to set assignments that have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.
Qualifications
This position normally requires a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program and typically 10+ years' related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience/advanced degree in engineering) related to electrical engineering systems in the Built Environment. This includes considerable experience in utilizing various computer software packages and automated electrical engineering and design equipment. An incumbent in this position should be in possession of a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification and be working toward Professional Engineering (PE) Registration. PE registration would be attained within the first 2 years of attaining this position level.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintains clear knowledge of HEAPY Corporate Vision, Mission, and Core Values and demonstrates awareness of how those objectives relate to all position responsibilities.
  • Approaches all assigned tasks as an opportunity for growth and experience, modeling the way for other team members.
  • Continually advances technical education and personal development aligned with OKRI goals.
  • Responsible for the design engineering services following with Corporate Vision, Mission, and Core Values as well as Corporate ISO Systems View(s), and related professional standards, client requirements, and corporate objectives.
  • Collaborates with more experienced engineering colleagues to prepare basic plan details and outlines, cost estimates, and perform calculations in support of broader engineering activities involving the design of electrical equipment, components, or systems.
  • Lays out full plan designs, plan details and outlines, identifies quantities of materials, cost estimates, and performs calculations for a detailed segment of a project.
  • Prepares technical specifications for review and approval.
  • Evaluates vendors' bids and drawings to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Reviews and approves electrical design drawings for assigned segment of project.
  • Assists with development of design guides, guide specifications, and design control procedures when directed by Practice Technical Leader.
  • Prepares technical reports such as life cycle cost analysis, facility conditions assessments, and other engineering guidance for clients.
  • Performs field tests & measurements, collects field data, as necessary.
  • Aids and support to proposal teams or proposal managers as requested.
  • Collaborates with and supports Design Engineers / Designer I & II colleagues on their technical development and professional growth.
  • Collaborates with field observation colleagues to perform field observations and tests, measurements, collect field data, and prepare field reports and related documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
