Job description

Description
About Fehr Graham
Fehr Graham Engineering & Environmental is a fast-growing Midwest firm built on collaboration, technical excellence, and a people-first culture. Our teams work on meaningful projects that strengthen the communities we serve, and we’re looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer to play a key technical leadership role within our MEP practice.

What’s in it for you?
As a Lead Electrical Engineer, you’ll serve as a technical authority on electrical and MEP design projects while partnering closely with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams. This role provides leadership through expertise and influence—not direct supervision—making it ideal for an engineer who enjoys owning complex work, mentoring informally, and shaping project outcomes. You will enjoy the opportunity to work alongside electrical engineers from partner firms for mentorship and support.

Where you’ll work
The position is based in either our Aurora or Rockford, Illinois offices. At Fehr Graham, we believe in work-life balance, and that includes injecting a healthy dose of fun into everything we do. It’s even part of our Core Values! We celebrate milestones and enjoy friendly team-building activities and office outings after work. A happy and engaged work team is a successful one. Each of our offices brings an environment filled with positive energy and enthusiasm. We encourage our teams to connect on multiple levels and support each other’s personal and professional growth.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead the electrical design of projects across municipal, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure markets
  • Develop and review electrical systems including power distribution, lighting, grounding, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems
  • Coordinate closely with mechanical, structural, civil, and architectural teams to deliver integrated designs
  • Provide technical guidance, quality control, and design oversight throughout project lifecycles
  • Serve as a key technical resource for project teams and clients, offering solutions to complex design challenges
  • Perform drawings, specifications, plan markups and calculations to ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable codes and standards
  • Support project planning, scope development, and fee proposals from a technical perspective
  • Interface with clients, utilities, contractors, and regulatory agencies as needed
  • Stay current on electrical codes, MEP trends, and emerging technologies and apply best practices to projects
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design standards, tools, and processes across the firm

Go beyond the job description. Discover projects that ignite your passion at Fehr Graham Engineering & Environmental.

What It Takes
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 8+ years of professional electrical engineering experience, with a strong MEP background
  • Experience working in a consulting engineering environment
  • PE license required
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC, local codes, and industry standards
  • Experience working with municipal water/wastewater projects is a plus.
  • Proven ability to lead projects technically without formal direct reports
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines
  • High level of organization, accountability, and attention to detail

What you’ll get
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to grow professionally at our progressive firm, which started in 1973. Our people-first organization is focused on giving our employees the opportunity for growth. In addition to a competitive salary, we also offer:
  • Medical/dental/vision
  • Life insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • 401K Retirement Plan
  • Profit-sharing bonus plan
  • Paid time off
  • An awesome work environment.
