Job description

Electrical Engineer

Department: Civil/Municipal

Employment Type: Full Time

Description

Waggoner Engineering, Inc. is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join our team in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This position will support the planning, design, and delivery of electrical, instrumentation, and controls systems for water and wastewater infrastructure projects.

The Electrical Engineer will be responsible for developing electrical designs and construction documents, performing engineering calculations, supporting projects through construction and commissioning, and collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver high-quality work within established schedules and budgets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and design low- and medium-voltage electrical power distribution systems for water and wastewater facilities.
  • Develop electrical construction documents, including single-line diagrams, panel schedules, power plans, lighting plans, control schematics, conduit block diagrams, and installation details.
  • Prepare and review electrical engineering calculations, including circuit load summaries, circuit breaker sizing, conduit and conductor sizing, voltage drop, fault current, and other applicable calculations.
  • Develop Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) contract drawing packages and coordinate electrical designs with other engineering disciplines.
  • Lead, review, and interpret electrical power system studies, including short-circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies.
  • Review P&IDs, control descriptions, and related process documentation to support the design and integration of electrical and control systems.
  • Apply applicable electrical and life-safety codes and standards, including NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), NFPA 70E, NFPA 101, and NFPA 820.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), and assisting with design-related field issues.
  • Participate in field inspections, system start-up, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, designers, clients, contractors, and other project stakeholders throughout design and construction.
  • Independently manage electrical design assignments for small to medium-sized projects while meeting established quality, budget, and schedule expectations.
  • Review electrical drawings, calculations, specifications, and other technical deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to engineers and designers as needed.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • 2–10 years of professional electrical engineering experience.
  • Electrical and industrial controls engineering experience within the water/wastewater industry.
  • Experience developing Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) contract drawing packages using AutoCAD.
  • Demonstrated experience designing low- and medium-voltage power distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering calculations, including load calculations, breaker sizing, conductor and conduit sizing, voltage drop, and fault current.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 70E, NFPA 101, and NFPA 820.
  • Experience supporting projects during construction, including shop drawing/submittal reviews, RFIs, field inspections, start-up, and commissioning.
  • Experience performing, leading, or reviewing electrical power system and arc flash studies.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to independently complete engineering assignments with limited supervision while effectively collaborating within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
  • Experience reading and interpreting P&IDs and control descriptions.
  • Experience modeling electrical power distribution systems using SKM PowerTools or similar power system analysis software.
  • Experience providing technical leadership or mentoring engineers and designers.
