Electrical Engineer Controls Engineer information

What are Electrical Engineer Controls Engineers?

Electrical Engineer Controls Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain control systems used to operate electrical equipment and machinery. They apply principles of electrical engineering and automation to ensure that processes run efficiently, safely, and reliably. These engineers often work with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, and other devices to manage manufacturing processes, building systems, or industrial equipment. Their role may also involve troubleshooting, system integration, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards.

How do Electrical Engineer Controls Engineers typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Electrical Engineer Controls Engineers often work closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, software developers, and production staff. Their role requires frequent communication to ensure that control systems are properly integrated with mechanical designs and software interfaces. Collaboration is essential during project planning, system commissioning, and troubleshooting phases, as each department’s input impacts the overall functionality and safety of automated systems. This team-based environment also provides opportunities to learn from other engineering disciplines, broadening your technical expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Controls Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Controls Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, control systems design, and automation, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in electrical or related engineering fields. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, HMI development, and relevant certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or Siemens/Rockwell credentials is often required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for designing reliable control systems, troubleshooting issues efficiently, and ensuring seamless integration within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Controls Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

Job description

Lead Electrical Controls Engineer

URGENTLY HIRING!

Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Lead Controls Engineer to drive the design, development, and integration of advanced automation and robotic systems across manufacturing and process environments. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for owning projects from concept through commissioning, while mentoring engineers and setting technical direction.

This position is ideal for a senior-level engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys solving complex problems, and can lead cross-functional teams to deliver high-performance automation solutions. You will play a key role in shaping system architecture, establishing standards, and ensuring successful project execution.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Project Ownership

  • Lead controls engineering efforts across multiple projects, ensuring delivery on time and within budget
  • Define system architecture, controls strategy, and technical standards for automation systems
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers
  • Review and approve control system designs, code, and documentation
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tools, and standards

Collaboration & Client Engagement

  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, and project teams to execute system designs
  • Interface directly with clients to define requirements, lead technical discussions, and resolve challenges
  • Provide oversight for panel design, system layout, and integration strategies
  • Lead design reviews, FATs, SATs, and commissioning activities

Engineering & System Integration

  • Design, program, and troubleshoot complex control systems including PLCs, HMIs, motion, robotics, and vision systems
  • Develop and standardize PLC/HMI code (Allen-Bradley preferred – Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View)
  • Integrate servo systems, VFDs, robotics, and machine vision platforms

Preferred experience with:

  • Vision systems: Keyence, Cognex, Fanuc iRVision
  • Robotics: Fanuc or similar platforms
  • Oversee system testing, validation, and performance optimization
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and industry best practices

Commissioning & Support

  • Lead system commissioning efforts both in-house and at customer sites
  • Diagnose and resolve complex issues across controls, robotics, and vision systems
  • Provide ongoing technical support and continuous improvement recommendations

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in controls engineering, automation integration, or robotics
  • Prior experience in a lead or senior-level role with project ownership preferred
  • Strong background with major PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley strongly preferred; Siemens/Omron/GE a plus)

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in PLC, HMI, and motion control systems (VFDs, servos)
  • Experience with robotic programming and machine vision integration preferred
  • Strong understanding of electrical schematics, panel design, and control system documentation
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical and industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, etc.)
  • Advanced troubleshooting and hands-on system modification capabilities

Professional Attributes

  • Proven leadership and project management skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to lead client interactions
  • Self-driven with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Willingness to travel (~30%) for commissioning and client support

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation package
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Generous PTO and flexible work environment
  • Opportunity to lead cutting-edge automation projects
  • Collaborative, growth-oriented engineering culture
